this book is generally very good. It comes with 2 CDs which allows you to practice listening and the writing test samples are good as well as they are up to date. The reading parts are mostly hard which I believe it truly reflects the real IELTS test LOL

This major 2006 history of monasticism in early Anglo-Saxon England explores the history of the Church between the conversion to Christianity in the sixth century and a monastic revival in the tenth. It represents the first comprehensive revision of accepted views about monastic life in England before the Benedictine reform. Sarah Foot shows how early Anglo-Saxon religious houses were simultaneously active and contemplative, their members withdrawing from the preoccupations of contemporary aristocratic society, while still remaining part of that world. Focusing on the institution of the 'minster' (the communal religious community) and rejecting a simplistic binary division between active 'minsters' and enclosed 'monasteries', Foot argues that historians have been wrong to see minsters in the light of ideals of Benedictine monasticism. Instead, she demonstrates that Anglo-Saxon minsters reflected more of contemporary social attitudes; despite their aim for solitude, they retained close links to aristocratic German society.

Jørgen Primdahl is Professor of Countryside and Landscape Planning at the Danish Centre for Forest, Landscape and Planning, University of Copenhagen, Denmark. He is a leading European specialist on agricultural landscape change and landscape stewardship policies. He is currently involved in international research concerning public policy interventions and the interface of globalisation and local landscape sustainability.

About the Author
Thomas Hegghammer is a Senior Fellow at the Norwegian Defence Research Establishment (FFI). He has contributed chapters to several edited books and his articles have appeared in journals such as International Affairs, The International Journal of Middle East Studies, The British Journal of Middle East Studies, The Middle East Journal, Studies in Conflict and Terrorism, and The Times Literary Supplement.

A real scholarly work on an important topic!

First, let med start by saying that this is a real scholarly work. Almost every page has lots of comprehensive footnotes. What impresses me the most, is all the primary (and secondary) sources Hegghammer has used in this book: Interviews with and biographies on ex-jihadists, prisoners from Guantanamo, families of active jihadists etc. (about 500 in all if I remember correctly). This makes Hegghammers arguments very convincing.

The book divides the time from 1979 into three periods. The first period ends in the mid-1990s and covers the rise of what Hegghammer calls "classical jihadism", that is the type of jihad conducted in Afghanistan against the Soviet Union, in defense of muslim territories. Other examples are Checnya and Bosnia. The second period lasts from the mid-1990s until 9/11 2001, and covers the rise of al-Qaida and global jihadism, a much more controversial doctrine than classical jihadism. The third period covers al-Qaidas operations in Saudi Arabia, after they were ousted from Afghanistan. For each period Hegghammer has a chapter on the political environment, a chapter on the leaders and the organisations (e.g. al-Qaida), and a chapter on the jihadist recruits themselves.

To me, the most interesting parts of the book were the ones that covered the rise of jihadism. This gives rise to some general lessons, and also to some thoughts on how to win the war on terror. Hegghammer argues convincingly that doing something about symbols of muslim suffering is more important than political reform at home, at least in dealing with al-Qaida. Of course, this may not be the case with all islamists, and he makes some interesting comparisons between Egyptian and Saudi Arabian islamists.

For someone more interested in Saudi Arabia itself (than me), the parts covering al-Qaidas operations in Saudi Arabia may be just as interesting, and rest assured that Hegghammer has covered this in detail.

Great authentic work

I am a Saudi myself and a physician so I know the culture Mr Hegghamer is talking about and I also know what a scholarly scientific work is. This is a great book by all means although I have to object to Mr Hegghammer reference about some massacres executed by the Israeli government as "claimed", but I understand what is it like to be an a academic in the US or Europe where condemning Israel could be of serious consequences on your professional future. Withstanding these glitches this book was the best I read on the subject and worth reading not only by westerners but also Saudis or Muslims who wants to read a critical piece by an an honest outsider not biased to the subject.

Jihad in Saudi Arabia

It is hard to remember this book as I have read 40 books in the past 2 years trying to educate myself about Muslims. I do remember that the Dictator Family has financed Taliban and al Quida. Their special business family, Osama Ben Laden is Saudi and has spent a large part of his vast fortune in the fight against infidels. Today I learned the Pope Sainted 400 Priests that were beheaded for not converting to Islam in the 15th Century. I was taken aback. I thought from what I had read this World Wide Battle by the Muslims to make the entire world one big Muslim world was from this Century. This book tells of the Jihad in Saudi Arabia and the rush of young Saudi men into the battle to get martyred.
Many returned after a week, disgusted with how hard it was. Young men in Saudi Arabia do not do physical labor, but loll about all day. They do not go to the store or seek a job. Some are educated in fine schools and then retire on family money. None do labor work, (it is too hot and it is hired by men from outside the country). It is a very strange society of very wealthy people from their giant pool of oil under the desert. This money is shared by the ruler to keep the people happy and to keep his family in power. He has a group of brothers that have taken turns as rulers. It is soon to be passed to a younger generation as the current generation is growing old and there are thousands of young men heirs to the throne and there will have to be a family election to see who will rule. The Saudi oil money has been the largest contributor to the cost of the battle to convert the world and behead those who do not yield.

Hard book to get your hand on in the states. It's regular used in British schools who offer the A-Level exams--a little like A.P. exams found in many American high schools. It's a fine collection of (mostly British) short stories. Sometimes you can find it through Barnes and Noble a little bit easier than Amazon

He chaired the committee that prepared the first marketisation and privatisation plan for Hungary, and has been a member of governmental advisory bodies since the early 1990s. A supporter of the Whig opposition to the restored Stuarts, Locke fled England for the Dutch provinces, where he polished his major works. Thorough, enjoyable, and much needed biography of Locke

This biography of Locke is long overdue. It is exceptionally well-written and highly readable. Roger Woolhouse, a specialist in Locke, writes with confidence and ease and one does NOT need to be knowledgeable about philosophy to follow the book. The book is a thorough and, for want of a better word, affectionate biography of a first rate thinker. It is also a tour through England's intellectual landscape in the last half of the 17th century.

Woolhouse divides the book with chapter headings that have multi-year spans, for example, France (November 1675-May, 1679). Within each chapter he then further subdivides the text by the same method, for example, March 1677-July 1678: Paris. I found this useful both in keeping track of events in Locke's life and in deciding how far I wanted to read at any one time. He makes extensive use of Locke's letters as well as those of the people with whom he corresponded. All the quotes are smoothly integrated into the text and the reader gets a real sense of getting to know the man. At the appropriate time in Locke's life, Woolhouse summarizes his work. For example, the various elements of the two Treatises on Government that Locke worked on over the years are briefly summarized in context and, when Locke finished the Treatises in the early 1680's, Woolhouse gives a nine page summary of these two critical works. The ongoing brief summaries and then the summary of the finished product give a nice sense of the development of Locke's ideas. Woolhouse does the same type of summarizing for the Essay Concerning Human Understanding and Locke's incomparable Letter Concerning Toleration (which ought to be reprinted in every major newspaper today). Woolhouse's summaries are clear and easy to follow. The groundbreaking Essay is a more difficult work but again Woolhouse's familiarity with Locke translates here into a smooth and readable summary. Locke spent much of the last ten years of his life writing about his version of what Christianity should be and repeatedly defending himself against critics who usually misread him or who used his work as an excuse for invective against "Socinianism" and atheism. Woolhouse's summaries of Locke's works in these years tend to be repetitive and slow reading. Perhaps Woolhouse could have cut back on his summaries here but then again this is what Locke did in his last years and the biographer cannot just ignore or skate over this. These arguments, which today often seem archaic, were critical to Locke.

Woolhouse does not sugar coat Locke. He discusses his investments in the East Africa Company whose primary trade was slaves. He also mentions that Locke never directly addressed the contradiction between slavery and his ideas but that he did sell his investment in the Company fifteen years before the Second Treatise came out - a fact that may or may not have indicated an awareness of the contradiction. Woolhouse also is very blunt about Locke's fears while he was in Holland under the threats of Charles II and James II. He quotes from letters to Locke's friends that clearly show Locke being "disingenuous" and lacking courage in which he claims, as Shaftesbury's secretary, he never really had anything to do with anti-government meetings or writings when in fact he did. He was very frightened. But overall this book is highly sympathetic to Locke. The reader gets a real sense that the author not only values Locke's ideas but deeply cares about the man himself.

Roger Woolhouse died in 2011. This book is a monument to an excellent philosopher as author and to an historical figure whose writing changed the way we think of government, religion and philosophy. I highly recommend it.

a fascinating life

John Locke's political philosophy resides in a strain that was ultimately to run through the thinking of the Founding Fathers of the American Revolution. His life is therefore at least as interesting as that of any 17th century man. Besides his intellectual contributions, Locke lived in interesting times, in youth through the English Civil War and in his age through the Glorious Revolution that presaged America's revolution.
Woolhouse is a fine writer with depth of understanding of the period and of the copious primary sources (that include some of Locke's records of incidental expenses and even his laundry lists). He writes clearly about the development of the ideas in Locke's principal treatises, and provides a thorough description of his activities, almost month-to-month. This latter attribute of the work prompts me to knock a star from the rating to warn prospective readers that they may be in for a more detailed biography than they really want. For me slogging through a bit of detail is worth the effort to arrive at a clear picture of Locke, his influences and the era in which he lived.

Stories of the debates that Locke had with fellow philosophers and clergymen are also revealed in this book along with showing his personal battle with a cough that haunted him his whole life. You can also see the very important role Locke played in the political aspect of France and London. His educational institutes and even secret love letters he wrote are found in this book as well. It's not the easiest read, but with acclamation and time you can find a way to learn from and enjoy your time spent reading this very specific biography.
