Structural Geology: An Introduction to Geometrical Techniques, by Donal M. Ragan

This combination of text and lab book presents an entirely different approach to structural geology. Designed for undergraduate laboratory classes, it provides a step-by-step guide for solving geometric problems arising from structural field observations. The book discusses both traditional methods and cutting-edge approaches, with emphasis given to graphical methods and visualization techniques that support students in tackling challenging two- and three-dimensional problems. Numerous exercises encourage practice in using the techniques, and demonstrate how field observations can be converted into useful information about geological structures and the processes responsible for creating them. This updated fourth edition incorporates new material on stress, deformation, strain and flow, and the underlying mathematics of the subject. With stereonet plots and solutions to the exercises available online at www.cambridge.org/ragan, this book is a key resource for undergraduates, advanced students and researchers wanting to improve their practical skills in structural geology.

Review
'Donal Ragan's new edition of Structural Geology: An Introduction to Geometrical Techniques is a classic with legs. Retaining all of the approachability and sound advice which has welcomed and guided generations of geologists, the new edition seamlessly incorporates an even stronger quantitative foundation, resplendent with fully integrated examples and exercises. Ragan's new digital illustrations will not disappoint those who admire his clean, unique drawing style, and will illuminate complex geometrical constructs for a new era of geologists.' Professor Patrick Kennelly, Long Island University, New York

'The Ragan textbook on Structural Geology: An Introduction to Geometrical Techniques offers a fresh, up-to-date account on modern methods for analysing both brittle and ductile structures. The book is thorough and comprehensive and its advantage over many other books is that it covers the basics in an exhaustive way. It is therefore extremely well suited for undergraduate students, but also for professional Structural Geologists and Academics.' Dr Uwe Ring, University of Canterbury, New Zealand

'This excellent book deals with a multitude of practical methods for structural geologists. These methods range from those appropriate at first year undergraduate level right through to those relevant to graduate research. The various techniques are very clearly explained and are richly illustrated with clear diagrams and worked examples. The new edition represents a significant expansion of earlier ones, and contains something for all structural geologists.' Dr Richard Lisle, Cardiff University

'Like the earlier editions, Ragan's book addresses a number of core methods in structural geology, from essential elements such as the trigonometry for devising true stratigraphic thicknesses to more challenging concepts such as manipulating strain data. Along the way readers are introduced to structure contours and stereographic projection. Rigorous methods of creating block diagrams, documenting variations in 3D structure and calculating the true attitude of planes using drill hole data are also covered. There are lots of careful diagrams and the mathematics, methods and procedures are laid out stepwise. ... The methods are readily applicable to other subsurface datasets, including seismic.' Geological Magazine

From the Publisher
A revised and expanded edition presenting a modern introduction to geometrical techniques used in structural geology--designed for a one-semester basic course. Incorporating the latest techniques developed since publication of the second edition, it includes a new chapter on thrust faults, an integrated discussion of the accuracy of field measurements, many worked-out problems, and a new appendix on spherical trigonometry.

About the Author
Don Ragan was educated at Occidental College, University of Southern California and at the University of Washington at Seattle, receiving his PhD in 1960. He spent a year as a Fulbright scholar at the University of Innsbruck, and later, with a National Science Foundation Fellowship, at Imperial College, London, where he received a Diploma of Membership in Geology (DIC). His teaching career at the University of Alaska, Fairbanks, and at Arizona State University has spanned a total of 34 years, and has focused on imbuing students with a thorough understanding of geometrical and analytical techniques in structural geology. His research interests centre on the role of structural settings in structure-making processes, including studies of Alpine peridotites, glacial ice and welded tuffs.

Many mistakes
By Lea
This book was very frustrating and made a somewhat hard class that much harder. On more than a few occasions our instructor had us correct the text. Other mistakes were obvious to anyone. It's a shame that you always feel iffy about the examples when the author actually does go to the trouble to do step by step explanations.

horrible
By sam
As a student, this is one of the WORST books I have ever seen used in a college classroom: 1) There are huge math errors. 2) Examples are nothing like the problems. 3) The variables are often not defined. 4) The quailty of the binding is horrible. Mine fell apart after two weeks! 4) The verbiage is not clear. He doesn't say what he thinks he is saying.

Interesting but....
By russm
Having made my living as an engineer (electrical), I was looking forward to learning something about the people that preceded me in the profession. Overall, I would have to say my expectations exceeded what the book provided. The writing was a little sloppy factually and grammatically in places, which was a bit distracting at times (perhaps a more thorough proof-reading would have helped). The book focuses on the lives of these remarkable people, which I did enjoy learning about. However, for many of the lesser known individuals, I was left wondering about their engineering contributions. That wasn't a problem for those I knew (e.g. Bell, Edison & Shannon), but it did leave a hole on the others. A short summary of the contributions and significance of their work would make this a much better read.

Globalization and the Politics of Development in the Middle East (The Contemporary Middle East), by Clement Moore Henry, Robert Springborg

In a new edition of their book on the economic development of the Middle East and North Africa, Clement Henry and Robert Springborg reflect on what has happened to the region's economy since 2001. How have the various countries in the Middle East responded to the challenges of globalization and to the rise of political Islam, and what changes, for better or for worse, have occurred? Utilizing the country categories they applied in the previous book and further elaborating the significance of the structural power of capital and Islamic finance, they demonstrate how over the past decade the monarchies (as exemplified by Jordan, Morocco, and those of the Gulf Cooperation Council) and the conditional democracies (Israel, Turkey, and Lebanon) continue to do better than the military dictatorships or "bullies" (Egypt, Tunisia, and now Iran) and "the bunker states" (Algeria, Iraq, Libya, Sudan, Syria, and Yemen).

Review
"Clement Henry and Robert Springborg's book, in particular, represents a serious attempt to build a typology of Arab authoritarianism, and one that maps remarkably well onto the outcomes of the Arab revolts so far ... stimulating, innovative, empirically rich and highly relevant for all students of authoritarianism and political transition."
Steffen Hertong, Perspectives on Politics

"... the book provides readers with a deep analysis of economic decision-making processes in a number of country cases, and it is particularly successful in highlighting the reasons behind the economic success of democratic countries vis-...-vis authoritarian regimes. The framework the authors establish throughout the study is useful for comprehending the political economy of development in the MENA region."
Yusuke Kawamura, New Middle Eastern Studies

Not for the Uninitiated
By Benjamin A. Plotke
A book with excellent content and miserable writing. The content deals with how economics and politics have effected the economic development in the middle east. The problem is the writing. It somehow manages to be complex and yet boring at the same time. It relies heavily on obscure academic terms and concepts. For example, take this quote from chapter One, "Schematically the colonial dialectic describes three basic stances (or Hegelian "moments") of a native elite towards the colonizers culture" I mean, cuz, like everyone knows what a "Hegelian 'moment'" is, rite? To me such a reference would seem more fitting in a philosophy text. Anyways, if you're considering assigning this to your poor undergrads, please reconsider. Thank you.

Soliton Equations and their Algebro-Geometric Solutions: Volume 1, (1+1)-Dimensional Continuous Models (Cambridge Studies in Advanced Mathe

This book is about algebro-geometric solutions of completely integrable nonlinear partial differential equations in (1+1)-dimensions; also known as soliton equations. Explicitly treated integrable models include the KdV, AKNS, sine-Gordon, and Camassa-Holm hierarchies as well as the classical massive Thirring system. An extensive treatment of the class of algebro-geometric solutions in the stationary and time-dependent contexts is provided. The formalism presented includes trace formulas, Dubrovin-type initial value problems, Baker-Akhiezer functions, and theta function representations of all relevant quantities involved. The book uses techniques from the theory of differential equations, spectral analysis, and elements of algebraic geometry (most notably, the theory of compact Riemann surfaces).

Very helpful
By entropent
This CD is a companion to JACT's three-volume Reading Greek (2nd ed.) series. It contains the reading assignments for the "Text and Vocabulary" volume. I have tried to learn Attic Greek from other courses, but as I have never taken a formal course, I have had no exposure to the spoken language. The pronunciation I had developed from my study of written explanations turned out to be very much off the mark. Once I got a feel for the correct pronunciation, I found I was far better able to learn vocabulary and my overall reading comprehension improved. This CD has made all the difference for me, and I wholeheartedly recommend it.

A word of caution regarding the JACT three-volume course is in order. I have tried several courses, to include JACT's three-volume set (with CD), Clyde Pfarr's "Homeric Greek," Mastronarde's "Introduction to Attic Greek," and Schoder's "A Reading Course in Homeric Greek." Unless you already understand the basics of Greek grammar, you simply will not make it through JACT's grammar explanations. Admittedly, one should probably not attempt Greek without previous experience with an inflected language. But even with a good grasp of Latin, along with exposure to the Greek courses listed above, I was at a loss with JACT. It is disjointed, fragmentary, and convoluted. I soon gave it up and relied on Mastronarde for my grammar, JACT's "Text and Vocabulary" with CD for the reading and listening, and Pfarr for Homeric vocabulary and practice. (I also like Morice's "Stories in Attic Greek" for a change of pace.)

JACT's "Independent Study Guide" has the translations for the "Text and Vocabulary," but it really isn't needed, as you can work out the translations easily with the provided vocabulary. And stay far away from JACT's grammar! Instead, use the "Text and Vocabulary" with CD as a supplement to a better course.

Ancient Attic meets Monty Python
By Markos
And I mean this in a good way. Many of these readings resound with strong British accents, and this to me is a good thing. The single biggest help in understanding Ancient Greek is when the readings are done with emphasis and emotion and passion and character. This c.d. passes the test. The readings from Lysistrata include some gender bending that is both in line with Ancient Greek practice (men read even the female parts) and which recalls a Monty Python skit. Another nice touch is having the NAUTHS speak with a strong cockney accent!

I listen to Greek with all different sorts of pronunciations. I like them all. I understand them all. I happen to use a basic Seminary Greek Erasmian and I had no problem understanding this c.d. The readers choose to use stress accents instead of pitches, and the vowels are basically the same as Erasmian. This means the only real difference is PHI as p and theta as t.

It should be noted that not all the readings from the JACT Reading text are produced here, but there is still a lot of audio included. It includes both some of the early, simple, made up readings (which are particularly easy to follow) as well as unadapted readings from Plato and Homer. The reading from the Odyssey is for some reason easier for me to understand than Stanley Lombardo's or any others I have heard on line.

The "sound effects" are pretty limited and primitive, but they help.

To get the most out of this c.d., you really need to have or purchase the JACT Reading Greek text, but these are available used for pretty cheap. Although this is not a full-fledged audio course like Assimil or Rico or Buth, it is very helpful in introducing an audio component to learning Ancient Greek.

"It's All Greek (or British) to Me!"
By Ryan Kouroukis
This 2 CD set is quite invaluable to investigate to get a grasp on how Ancient Greek sounded like in ancient times.

The first disc is a lecture on sounds in the Ancient Greek world ie: vowels, consonants and sentence structures, and then goes into a scenerio of actors speaking in dialogue in Ancient Greek. Disc 2 furthers this scenerio and then covers excerpts of Plato, Herodotus, Aristophanes, and others, read and acted by various British proffesors and actors.

The scenerios have some relistic sound effects that make the listening a bit easier. The woman reader for instance must be the worst speaker I've ever heard! She sounds like a mechnical machine, terribly monotonous... it's very hard to bear! Other than her, the others do okay and get quite lively when they play different characters. It's very engaging when there are muliple roles being acted.

There is no text or translations in the booklet, just brief point-form notes, cues and diagrams, which can be used for those who want to try out some of the sounds for themselves.

This set offer us a rare glimpse into almost forgotten world of how Ancient Greek sounded like, even though it probably didn't sound like these Brits make it to be, but facinating nevertheless!

The Renaissance of Empire in Early Modern Europe, by Thomas James Dandelet

This book brings together a bold revision of the traditional view of the Renaissance with a new comparative synthesis of global empires in early modern Europe. It examines the rise of a virulent form of Renaissance scholarship, art, and architecture that had as its aim the revival of the cultural and political grandeur of the Roman Empire in Western Europe. Imperial humanism, a distinct form of humanism, emerged in the earliest stages of the Italian Renaissance as figures such as Petrarch, Guarino, and Biondo sought to revive and advance the example of the Caesars and their empire. Originating in the courts of Ferrara, Mantua, and Rome, this movement also revived ancient imperial iconography in painting and sculpture, as well as Vitruvian architecture. While the Italian princes never realized their dream of political power equal to the ancient emperors, the Imperial Renaissance they set in motion reached its full realization in the global empires of sixteenth- and seventeenth-century Spain, France, and Great Britain.

Review
"The author draws on a wide range of both visual and written sources to create an accessible, compelling synthesis of political culture across early modern Europe. The chapters on the Holy Roman Empire, Spain, and France are the book's strongest, while the inclusion throughout the book of overseas empires and architecture into a European political narrative is particularly noteworthy. Summing up: recommended."
B. J. Maxson, Choice

"Ultimately, the book should be obligatory reading for anyone interested in imperial history, early modern art and architectural history, and the history of the Renaissance."
The American Historical Review

A comprehensive and original take on Europe's rediscovery of antiquity and the political justification of imperial conquest that it facilitated. Making People Illegal: What Globalization Means for Migration and Law (Law in Context), by Catherine Dauvergne

This book examines the relationship between illegal migration and globalization. Under the pressures of globalizing forces, migration law is transformed into the last bastion of sovereignty. This explains the worldwide crackdown on extra-legal migration and informs the shape this crackdown is taking. It also means that migration law reflects key facets of globalization and addresses the central debates of globalization theory. This book looks at various migration law settings, asserting that differing but related globalization effects are discernable at each location. The "core samples" interrogated in the book are drawn from refugee law, illegal labor migration, human trafficking, security issues in migration law, and citizenship law. Special attention is paid to the roles played by the European Union and the United States in setting the terms of global engagement. The book's conclusion considers what the rule of law contributes to transformed migration law.

The Science and Politics of Global Climate Change: A Guide to the Debate, by Professor Andrew Dessler, Edward A. Parson

The second edition of Dessler and Parson's acclaimed book provides an integrated treatment of the science, technology, economics, policy, and politics of climate change. Aimed at the educated non-specialist, and at courses in environmental policy or climate change, the book clearly lays out the scientific foundations of climate change, the issues in current policy debates, and the interactions between science and politics that make the climate change debate so contentious and confusing. This new edition is brought completely up to date to reflect the rapid movement of events related to climate change. In addition, all sections have been improved, in particular a more thorough primer on the basic science of climate change is included. The book also now integrates the discussion of contrarian claims with the discussion of current scientific knowledge; extends the discussion of cost and benefit estimates; and provides an improved glossary.

Review
'This timely, informative and well-written book does an excellent job of explaining, in language accessible to everyone, the scientific basis for our current understanding of global warming and climate change, as well as societal implications and the political barriers to sound, rational policy. Its co-authors are well recognized experts in science and in public policy. I recommend it to anyone who wishes to gain a better understanding of this complex issue - what the debate is all about - and as a core textbook for introductory courses on the environment, climate change, or public policy.' Professor Neal Lane, Malcolm Gillis University Professor and Senior Fellow of the James A. Baker III Institute for Public Policy, Rice University. Former Science Advisor to President Clinton and former Director of the U.S. National Science Foundation

'As the scientific evidence on human induced climate change becomes stronger and more widely accepted, voices that question it appear to get louder and seemingly more coordinated. In a complex area such as climate change, politics inevitably runs into conflict with the domain of science. This book is a timely analysis of the scientific evidence of climate change as well as the political forces that question its full acceptance. Dessler and Parson have produced a remarkable piece of work that is relevant for the scientific community in understanding the political implications of their work and for politicians and the public at large to understand not only the overwhelming scientific evidence that has emerged in recent years, but also the remaining uncertainties that need to be addressed in future scientific endeavor. This feature alone and the simple and readable manner in which the book is written make it essential reading for scientists as well as the concerned public at large.' Dr R. K. Pachauri, Chairman, Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and Director General, The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI), India

'... there is a real need for a comprehensive book on climate change ... The Science and Politics of Global Climate Change is it. It does exactly what the title and subtitle promise, providing insights into the causes and effects of the contributing meteorological phenomena and into why it has been so hard to get consensus among governments ... copies should be shipped to anyone who doubts the reality of climate change, starting with presidents in denial.' New Scientist

'... requires no specialised knowledge, but is accessible to any educated general reader who wants to make more sense of the climate change debate. It also sheds light on how science is used in policy debates.' The Chemical Engineer

'Each of the key aspects of global climate change is covered, with up-to-date and well-referenced information throughout. Its impressive breadth and the provision of succinct overviews of source material in the further reading sections of each chapter mean that teachers, lecturers and researchers will all find this book a useful starting point for in-depth study. There are now numerous taught masters courses on 'global change issues', and this book constitutes a must-have addition to their reading lists. ... read the book in its entirety - it is well worth it. ... [This book] is an excellent attempt at deconstructing the confusion that surrounds the climate-change debate. This reviewer has been waiting some time for a book such as this to appear. ... The science and politics of climate change are brought together quite seamlessly, ... Dessler and Parson's book is a must for those who want to move beyond the rhetoric and understand the relationship between climate science policy, and also for those seeking an interdisciplinary outlook on the management of global environmental issues. ... This book will be most useful to undergraduates and post-graduates in the fields of environmental science, sustainability and international politics. Each of the key aspects of global climate change is covered, with up-to-date and well referenced information throughout. its impressive breadth and the provision of succinct overviews of source material in the further reading sections of each chapter mean that teachers will all find this book a useful starting point for in-depth study. ... as a primer that brings together global climate change science and politics it succeeds very well indeed.' Times Higher Education Supplement

'This is an excellent way into the subject for the beginner ... one of the most lucid and readable introductory accounts of the topic that has been published in some while. As such it should be seen as a 'must-buy' and an essential addition to the library.' TENews

'This is a book which all scientists and the educated general public should read and reflect upon before it is too late to halt the apparently inevitable progress to Armageddon.' Chromatographia

'... a useful compendium of the current debates in the science and politics of climate change ... succinct and consistent book ... Ensure[s] fluent reading for non-expert, yet educated, citizens. The book is logically structured and it should become a key reading and teaching source in georgaphy and environmental sciences. It can also be valuable to doctoral students and senior researchers interested in learning about climate change science and politics. Overall it is a book worth having on one's shelf.' Environmental Sciences

'As more and more extreme weather events around the globe are being associated with climate change, it is sometimes difficult to be able to see the wood for the trees, but this book takes the reader very clearly through the 'maze' of claims and counter-claims. ... if only government leaders would read, digest and follow up some of the suggestions in the last chapter, there would be optimism that the problem can be overcome. As always with Cambridge University Press, the book, which is illustrated with diagrams, charts and boxes, is impeccably produced, and is an absolute 'must' for every reader of this journal.' International Journal of Meteorology

'Written by an atmospheric scientist and a law professor with extensive public policy experience, the book effectively tackles the rough-and-tumble intersection of science and policy that has led to confusion and inaction ... The scholarly value of [the book] is indisputable. Dessler and Parson independently possess significant authority on both the science and the politics of climate change. Their treatment of the subject illustrates the complexity of the problem with remarkable ease and clarity ... the carefully thought-through recommendations make this book critical reading for policymakers ... considering action on the issue.' Maria Ivanova, The College of William and Mary

'... coverage and presentation of climate science and policy [is] commendable ... a good candidate for a primer for multidisciplinary classes devoted to climate policy ...' Randall M Wigle, Wilfrid Laurier University

"This book would make a very good supplemental resource for an environmental science course, and it would be a good entry point for students who want deeper knowledge of climate change issues." W.E Williams, St. Mary's College of Maryland

"...the book treats this contentious field clearly, dispassionately, and logically. ...Highly recommended." CHOICE

"[This] refined second edition offers one of the best summary backgrounds of this complex topic now available. They carefully describe what we know about the science of climate change, and why we can make some overall global forecasts with confidence." Oceanography

Good read
By L. Johnson
Recently used this book for an online course, and I really enjoyed reading though it. This book provides you with a nice overall look into the world of Climate Change Politics. What I really appreciated about this book is that you do not need to have a degree in Climatology or Political Science to understand the material.

A must-have for your collection
By JBOZE
This is an excellent way into the subject for the beginner. There's some very sound science, most of which is agreed upon and a good understanding of how policy making works, or doesn't. The two ideas are brought together along with a discussion as to how we might proceed. One of the strengths of the book is the frequent use of boxes to put alternative viewpoints and summaries to show where we are in the debate. The overall effect is one of the most lucid and readable introductory accounts of the topic that has been published in some while. As such it should be seen as a 'must-buy' and an essential addition to the library.

Excellent work
By Stefan Klose
How does science work? And how do politics work? How does it all fit together with the data that has come from various sources all over the planet - and is climate change real? All these questions are addressed in an easy read, very neutral. The authors take a firm stand on the issue finally, from a scientific perspective, and the result is clear: Yes, it is real, and it is coming at us, while politicans are incapable and totally overwhelmed by the problem. It is a new kind of threat nobody can deal with, thus we ignore it. Too much for us. Surprising to read from two high profile, Ex-NASA scientists from the US themselves. Alerting at the same time. A must read to be up to date with the debate or quickly get an overview. Stefan Klose - University of Ulm - Germany
