professor's perspective
By NYer
I'm teaching a course using this as the text, and here's my professor's perspective. This book has a number of major advantages, in particular the clarity of the exposition and huge number of activities. There are also a number of downsides, most of which would be simple to fix. I don't understand how the reviewers didn't point them out. If I ever decide to do a review for a journal, I'll explain in detail exactly where the problems lie in detail, but here's short version; It is clear that the authors are not phonologists or phoneticians, and they make a few errors. One example: /ɑ/ is not a central vowel but a back one, same really for [ʌ], which is why Enɡlish learners often confuse them. Why the authors do not use IPA but feel the somewhat archaic need to come up with a modified system is beyond me. Wikitionary uses IPA, other courses (e.g., intro to linguistics) may very well use IPA. Why confuse students with different systems? IPA allows cross-linguistic comparisons. [r] for example is "rolled" (tecnhically trilled) rhotic, not the US approximant [ɹ]. Finally, phonology is not clearly separated from the consonant chapter, which is really quite long 60+ pages! I should have divided it into two for my course, and I will next time.

Pronunciation, but a little lacking
By ravingmonk
This text was used in a phonetics class. It is clear and able to provide even a CD with appropriate sounds, however, I thought it would have been better for the authors to use International Phonetic Alphabet rather than the American only version. Also due to this there are slight differences in some of the alphabet characters, and it would have been best to teach student's using a more universal method.

However, the book overall is simplistic and easy to read, though dense in some areas with lots of examples. I think it provides as it says a great "reference guide" to ESL teachers for classroom activities to teach the sounds of North American English to students.

Great resource book
By V from Sunnyside
This is great resource. I highly recommend it. It's detailed but readable. I'm working on a MA in TESOL and of all the texts we've been assigned, this is the most easily digestible. It's well organized and focused but written with language and pace that won't make your brain feel like it will explode. Those of you who are grad students know what I mean...after a certain amount of info you just want to quit and go a lay down on concrete because that may be more comfortable.

Review
"...intellectually worthwhile and entertaining." - Publishers Weekly

"The popular way of treating scandals in the media is partisan or prurient and sensationalist. Ari Adut's book On Scandal cuts in another direction. He is analytical and comparative, showing the conditions under which various kinds of scandals occur or do not occur. Adut's work will illuminate the reader in the advance of sociological understanding. It is both an intellectual pleasure and a pleasure to read. It opens contentious events to the sociological eye with great clarity. The book will make its readers scandal-sophisticates." - Randall Collins, Dorothy Swaine Professor in Sociology, University of Pennsylvania

"Ari Adut tells us better than any scholar before him how scandals work. His case studies of scandals in politics and in art, of sex and of money and of taste, from the U.S., the U.K., and France, all give weight to a study that is sociologically original, subtle, and illuminating." - Michael Schudson, Columbia School of Journalism, author of The Good Citizen

"Historians and journalists have long written about particular scandals but have rarely reflected about scandal in general. In this brilliant and very readable book, Ari Adut subjects scandal to a penetrating sociological gaze, revealing its repeated dynamics and its potent force as an agent of social and cultural change. This is sociology at its most illuminating." - William Sewell, Frank P. Hixon Distinguished Service Professor of Political Science and History Emeritus, University of Chicago

"Scandal has arisen for centuries and has always involved publicizing and stigmatizing moral transgression. In a wide-ranging historical and contemporary analysis, Ari Adut shows, however, that the central offenses around which scandal arises change and vary both dramatically and systematically. Read Adut for shock value if you wish, but read him especially for a major contribution to the analysis of public moral sensibility." - Viviana A. Zelizer, Lloyd Cotsen '50 Professor of Sociology, Princeton University, author of The Purchase of Intimacy

"Historians of nineteenth-century Britain and twentieth-century France and the United States should be provoked, positively, by this thoroughly interdisciplinary treatment of Oscar Wilde's time, French political corruption, Watergate, and Monica Lewinsky."
Journal of Interdisciplinary History, RIR

Penetrating, insightful and a great, vivid read
By Dave Samsa
We often think of morality as a matter of individual conscience. "Doing the right thing," many argue, is something that emanates from deep in the soul of a man or woman. With clinical precision and stylistic verve, Ari Adut shows us that in fact morality is the result of particular social configurations. Against the solipsistic account of morality, we learn in this book that structural, path-dependent, collectivist, strategic, and appearance-related factors determine moral action. Scandals are moral events writ large, and Adut explains how they are the tips of social icebergs that come to full view only after long maneuvers. We also learn that scandals, far from being isolated sensational moments, are emblematic of mores located in matrices of social and historical junctures.

The solipsistic account goes back at least as far back as Kant and the conception of ethics as a matter of individual rationality. Reason can, for him, guide us properly as we navigate moral quandaries such as the Trolley Problem, for example. But if we heed Adut, we see that morals have deep genealogies, as exposed by the efflorescence of scandals. And these are not marginal events: they occur in the most cardinal domains of the human condition: the political realm, intimacy and sex, and the domain of beauty. Moral action is thus, contra Kant, neither free nor fully rational: it depends on a constellation of social factors. The Trolley Problem is thus unanswerable, unless one can carry out a proper analysis of its path and context. Without that, it remains an otiose exercise.

Each chapter provides a case study in which a fascinating moral puzzle is disassembled and illuminated. In the second chapter, we are led through the vivid demimonde of Oscar Wilde. While Victorian morality was quite stringent, homosexuality was widely tolerated sub rosa. Why, then, was Wilde crucified despite being an artistic eminence of the time? With rich historical detail, Adut explains that the concept of social contamination is crucial to our understanding of scandals like Wilde's. His intimate relationship with Lord Douglas eventually came to taint the highest political offices of Britain. Sodomy, male prostitutes, the corruption of the young, and sheer aestheticism all came to a head when Wilde antagonized Queensberry. Against the Habermasian conception of the public sphere as the site of normative, civic deliberation, we see that in fact the management and contestation of appearances dictated the pace towards scandal.

The third chapter takes us from the realm of intimacy to the political world. Adut focuses on the US presidency and its internal contradictions. Again, the question becomes one of why similar potential scandals did not emerge, while Watergate would eventually become a watershed event in American political history. With the skill of a seasoned historian of the American executive branch, Adut traces the notion of presidential vulnerability to the paradoxical nature of the highest office in the land. Before the twentieth century, US presidents were often subordinated to Congress. The rise of American imperialism in the 1900s led to a higher significance of foreign policy, something that enhanced the role of the executive after World War I (one could argue that it begins earlier, with the US taking possession of Cuba and the Philippines). However, Kennedy's adventurism in Vietnam and the morass of the war during LBJ's presidency undermined the office by the time Nixon took power and the Watergate scandal broke out slowly over two years. The waning prestige of political elites, declining dependence on political institutions, and rising transparency all enhanced a scandal-prone culture. Watergate was thus the result of very particular path-dependent logics.

Chapter four provides a fascinating account of another paradox, this time in Europe. French corruption scandals in the 1990s became more common, despite the fact that venality had been tolerated for decades. Why did this occur? Taking us to a different culture with the adroit expertise of a sophisticated tour guide, Adut explains the unique role of the `juges d'instruction' (investigating magistrates) in the French judicial system. Possessing a relatively low status within the civil service, the juges nevertheless had tremendous power to investigate political figures through apparent or real corruption inquiries. These norm or moral entrepreneurs appeared to be moral crusaders, when in reality many were motivated by personal gain and desire to achieve greater collective power. Thus, strategic targeting of leading political figures, including Dominique Strauss-Kahn and even Jacques Chirac, was often successful. But it was enabled by structural conditions such as administrative decentralization, economic liberalization, and political party cohabitation. Nevertheless, other internal logics of scandal led to the decline of the anti-corruption `crusade': a law of diminishing returns, the public cost of scandals, the proactive role of third parties; the decline of impartiality; and the costs of publicity.

DSK's recent sexual shenanigans could have well made it into Adut's fifth chapter. In it, Adut explores why the American public sphere seems to have become increasingly prone to scandals such as the Clinton-Lewinsky ordeal. Some accounts tell us that such scandals are the result of social cohesion geared at repressing immorality and disruptive behaviors. Others point to the puritanism of US culture. Adut begs to differ, and again finds explanations in historical trajectories unique to the societies in question. He discovers another paradoxical gem: the increasing sexual liberalization of the sixties, including the push by feminism, is what allowed for a decline in public modesty regarding sexual matters. This shift in culture made it easier to publicize prurient matters. Adut takes us through the rise and decline of modesty, from Plato's modest stance towards pederasty to Linda Tripp's graphic accusations, with brilliant, stimulating analyses. We are left to wonder what would be Adut's expert take on DSK's travails in a posh New York City hotel, as he stood accused by a lowly African maid.

The lurid and the salacious often mislead us into error, but Adut is not deluded as he penetrates the logic of scandal in the last chapter, on moral disturbances in the art world. With a depth of knowledge reminiscent of Robert Hughes, Adut traces the shock of the new in modern art. The oppositional self-identity of modernism cannot be understood without the contextualization of the social roles of artists, patrons, curators, and critics in 19th century France. Impressionism, in particular the work of Manet, was the crucial event in provoking the Salon, which had tightly regulated art mores until then. `Le Dejeuner sur L'herbe' of 1863, as well as other works like `Olympia', which portrayed the world of the meretricious in a matter-of-fact way, broke new ground by challenging ossified institutional authorities. Without this period, the work of Ernst, Picasso, and even de Kooning and the abstract expressionism of Pollock could not have been possible. Still, Adut is aware that different schools of art vied for respect with each other, often deploying moralistic language even in the cause of amoralism in art. Far from being merely a move away from ethics, modern art involves moral battles undertaken by different camps for strategic purposes. We thus come to be skeptical of the artistic or pecuniary intentions of those like Damien Hirst of Jeff Koons, who have become moral entrepreneurs of a different sort.

Adut's work shows us that it is possible to explain morality from a non-normative perspective. This is a much-needed corrective to some areas of social science, which treat the public sphere in explicitly or implicitly moral terms. Political philosophy, for instance, has a long tradition of equating civic participation and public spiritedness with moral virtue. It is a long line that can be traced to Plato's normative account of deliberation, Aristotle's dialectics, and even in putatively amoral thinkers like Machiavelli, who nevertheless smuggle the idea of civic virtue into their political `science.' Even social theory, such as the later work of Habermas, makes this error. If we read Machiavelli correctly, we see that political and public life is in the realm of appearances and aesthetic action in particular historical junctures. Adut disabuses us of the Habermasian illusion by placing emphasis on context, collective contestation, and path-dependency. It would be interesting to see if his model applies to cases that are not Western, non-modern, and are not located in liberal democratic societies like France, the US and the UK. Sex scandals in Japan, the toleration of political corruption in Latin America, the status of homosexuality in Southern Africa, and religious or artistic intolerance in the Middle East would be fascinating case studies for Adut's incisive theoretical scalpel.

The Renaissance in Italy: A Social and Cultural History of the Rinascimento, by Guido Ruggiero

This book offers a rich and exciting new way of thinking about the Italian Renaissance as both a historical period and a historical movement. Guido Ruggiero's work is based on archival research and new insights of social and cultural history and literary criticism, with a special emphasis on everyday culture, gender, violence, and sexuality. The book offers a vibrant and relevant critical study of a period too long burdened by anachronistic and outdated ways of thinking about the past. Familiar, yet alien; pre-modern, but suggestively post-modern; attractive and troubling, this book returns the Italian Renaissance to center stage in our past and in our historical analysis.

Review
"A master historian of the Renaissance offers us a fascinating new means of understanding and appreciating Italy's cultural development in the period between the Ancient and the Modern world. This is essential reading for undergraduate and graduate students across the disciplines as well as travelers off to explore the wonders of Italian civilization."
Joanne M. Ferraro, San Diego State University, author of Venice: History of the Floating City

"At a moment when many social and cultural historians have turned away from the very idea of the Italian Renaissance altogether or, at most, reduced it to an elitist movement, Ruggiero's bold new synthesis calls on all of us to reconsider. Perhaps it still does make sense to think of the Renaissance as a decisive moment in the making of modern and even postmodern culture."
John Jeffries Martin, Duke University, North Carolina

"The most imaginative and compelling survey of the Italian Renaissance available now. Lively, informed and thought-provoking, it presents the newest research and the best of current approaches to literature and culture in a very readable style by a master historian at the top of his game."
Nicholas Terpstra, University of Toronto

"In this long book, Ruggiero rejects recent scholarship that has minimized the significance of the Italian Renaissance. Instead, he argues that the cities of Florence, Venice, and Milan enjoyed a distinct period of precocity over the rest of Europe between roughly 1300 and 1500 ... A thorough and accessible introduction to northern Italian history during this important period. Summing up: recommended."
B. J. Maxson, Choice

author gave an incisive talk at UCLA on his book
By W Boudville
Earlier today I was fortunate to hear the author talk at the UCLA Center for Medieval and Renaissance Studies. He expounded eloquently for an hour on this book. Though necessarily of course he could only hit the highlights. He spent some time explaining his choice of Rinascimento, in preference to Renaissance. The latter is a French word that was first applied to this period in Italy by Frenchmen in the 19th century. Ruggiero suggested that had the Italians of the Renaissance known somehow that this word would one day refer to their time, they would surely have objected. They would have preferred an Italian word.

Plus, during that time, the French were emerging as a modern nation state, and expressing this in part by forays into the divided Italian peninsula. Another reason for those Italians to have resented the French naming them and that time.

The book and talk also went at length into what 'humanism' might have meant for those years and for which historical persons it could rightfully have been applied to.

His talk was well received by the audience. His book deserves likewise by you.

A Nation of Immigrants, by Susan F. Martin

Immigration makes America what it is and is formative for what it will become. America was settled by three different models of immigration, all of which persist to the present. The Virginia Colony largely equated immigration with the arrival of laborers, who had few rights. Massachusetts welcomed those who shared the religious views of the founders but excluded those whose beliefs challenged the prevailing orthodoxy. Pennsylvania valued pluralism, becoming the most diverse colony in religion, language, and culture. This book traces the evolution of these three competing models of immigration as they explain the historical roots of current policy debates and options. Arguing that the Pennsylvania model has best served the country, the final chapter makes recommendations for future immigration reform. Given the highly controversial nature of immigration in the United States, this book provides thoughtful, well-reasoned analysis, valuable to both academic and policy audiences for the ways it places today's trends and policy options into historical perspective.

Review
"In this important and compelling study, Susan Martin provides a fresh historical perspective for understanding immigration and its governance in the United States. A Nation of Immigrants demonstrates the persistence of three distinctive models of immigration dating back to the colonial era, revealing the full range of constructive and detrimental legacies that these traditions have yielded over time. In contrast to most previous works, this book also teaches us a great deal about the significant interplay between the immigration policies adopted by officials and the grassroots experiences of immigrants and refugees. In an impressive merging of careful scholarship and rich personal experience in the policy process, Martin gives new meaning to our immigrant past and offers thoughtful recommendations for our way forward on this irrepressibly contentious issue."
-Daniel J. Tichenor, University of Oregon

"It is a truism to say that America is a nation of immigrants. But in this brilliant work Susan Martin shows us how the United States truly was shaped by immigration from colonial times to the present. A magisterial work of political and social history, this book is perfectly timed and will be read by generations to come."
-James Hollifield, Southern Methodist University

"US immigration policy debates obviously are increasingly passionate and stalemated. Alas they also are ill-informed by history. Susan Martin's book seeks to 'provide a thoughtful, well-reasoned analysis...by placing today's trends and policy options into historical perspective.' This is a great success - a cool breeze of reason and fact to temper the emotions that prevail. Whether or not they agree with Martin's views, those who actually want to understand the convoluted history, bizarre politics and embarrassing contradictions of US immigration policy should read this book."
-Michael Teitelbaum, Alfred P. Sloan Foundation

"Susan Martin uniquely combines scholarly dedication and policy experience. In this book, she has brought both to bear on the resolution of a quandary I cannot state better than she does herself: 'It is a truism that the United States is a nation of immigrants. . . The phrase, however, hides as much as it illuminates.' She elegantly resolves the quandary by analyzing successive phases of US immigration in terms of three initial models: Virginia, Pennsylvania, ands Massachusetts."
-Aristide Zolberg, The New School for Social Research

"A Nation of Immigrants is an exemplary synthesis and interpretive history of its urgent subject. It is also a deeply considered and thought-provoking book." -TNR.com

"Recommended." -Choice

"...an informative and engaging book." -David M. Reimers, Journal of American History

Review
"Read it as a clear, informed survey of the lesser-known wars of early American history, or as a strongly argued reinterpretation of the pattern and relevance of early American military experience, John Grenier's excellent book earns a place on the short shelf of essential books in U.S. military history."
-John Shy, Professor Emeritus of History, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor

"John Grenier demonstrates convincingly that there was an American way of war in the colonial and revolutionary eras, which was before the time when previous historians have acknowledged the beginnings of an American pattern of conflict. This earlier form of warfare was in some respects far more brutal and devastating than what came later; but the tendency to blur the differences between civilians and combatants has remained a troubling part of our martial heritage. Grenier's impressive volume will require us to rethink the contours of American military history."
-Don Higginbotham, Dowd Professor of History, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill

"The First Way of War offers an important reminder that early Americans fought their wars in a variety of ways. One way was largely designed for Indians, depended on unconventional methods, and could be terrifyingly violent. Based on wide and deep research, Grenier surveys a variety of wars between American colonists and Indians, covering both familiar and rarely-tread ground, and details the different techniques tried, adopted, and sometimes discarded as the colonists struggled to find a way to defeat a resilient and resourceful enemy. This is a significant contribution to the increasingly complex and subtle field of early American military history."
-Professor Wayne E. Lee, Department of History, The University of Louisville

"Grenier makes a strong case that a distinctive method of American warfare emerged during the colonial era. The author has the rare facility of combining an exciting narrative with thought-provoking analysis. A well-researched and well-written book that deserves serious consideration."
-Brian McAllister Linn, Texas A&M University

"The First Way of War is a well-crafted and exhaustively documented piece of scholarship, with each footnote an authoritative mini-bibliographical essay."
-Thomas W. Cutrer, Arizona State University, Military History

"...Grenier's study reveals North America's four-hundred-year continuum of irregular warfare and challenges Americans to confront the stark realities of their 'martial culture'."
-Kevin T. Barksdale, Marshall University, The Virginia Magazine of History and Biography

"The book works well as an overview of warfare in eastern North America in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Grenier's long perspective usefully conflates a multitude of little wars into a long-term struggle between Europeans and native peoples for survival and dominance in North America, a struggle that climaxed in the British triumph in the French and Indian War."
-Andrew Cayton, Miami University, The International History Review

"well-written monograph...thanks in part to Grenier's lucid prose, we have an excellent analysis of how Americans waged unlimited war from the early colonial period to the beginning of the Republic."
-John Richard Mass, Ohio State University, The North Carolina Historical Review

"The book's strength lies in its recognition and treatment of the asymmetrical dimension of war as it relates to societies and cultures in general...Grenier's book is lucid and well-written"
-MAJ Joseph P. Alessi, USA, Military Review

"[Grenier] has addressed the arguments of would-be critics like myself with a sound analytical framework and a well-researched and well-presented narrative. Scholars of American history and of military history will find this book thoughtful and highly provocative."
-Guy Chet, University of North Texas, American Historical Review

"...a richly insightful contribution to the literature on American ways of war." -Adam Jones, Journal of Genocide Research

"The First Way of Ware is a well-researched and thought-provoking work overall. In addition, the historiographical magnitude of Grenier's arguments alone should make it required reading for serious students of early American military history."
The Journal of Interdisciplinary History, Wesley T. Joyner, University of Southern Mississippi

A Misleading Title
By J. Bratten
While very excited that another historian had addressed the oft-overlooked Second Hundred Years' War period, I was somewhat disappointed to find that Grenier seemed to limit his thesis to Native-colonial confrontations. He falls into the trap of believing that light infantry tactics originated in America, whereas they could be found all over Eastern Europe in the groups of auxiliary soldiers hired by European armies.

In addition, in his section on the French and Indian War, he fails to make note of the distinction that colonial forces made between French and Indian enemies. While Indian villages could be destroyed, it was rare that English colonists or ranger companies went on scalp hunts of French colonists. Much of this "first way of war" is tied to the beliefs that most colonists had about Native Americans, which was that it was an "eye for an eye." They responded to violence with violence. Colonial warfare with indigenous Indian nations, whether as their allies or enemies, was waged with a ferocity that resembled much racial warfare of the time, such as the English in Ireland.

On the other hand, English colonists could also work alongside Indians as friendly allies, such as the way that the colony of Massachussetts did in the Pequot War of the 17th century. Overall, while Grenier's work is a good synthesis of Native-colonial warfare, he overlooks the intricacies of colonial-Native relations.

Must read
By R. A. Herrera
Well-written, thoroughly researched, and persuasively argued, this work is not about who started what first--leave that to children in the sandbox--, rather it addresses the roots of the American style of warfare. Whatever practices the various Indian nations had in waging war were not as important as the cultural and historical baggage carried by Europeans to the New World and their resort to those practices out of frustration at their inability to match Indian agility or skill in the wilds of North America.

War to the Knife...
By Kevin F. Kiley
This is an interesting work with a fascinating thesis. However, the analysis and general information in the book is terribly one-sided (against the Americans and how they allegedly waged war up to 1815 against the indigenous American Indian tribes, who are generally treated in the old, outdated and historically inaccurate `noble savage' manner), and it appears from the first sentence in the Preface that the conclusion drawn was already decided upon before the research was done in the first place: `This book is an attempt to understand better the evolution of an early American way of war than condoned the use of violence against enemy noncombatants.'

I purchased this volume shortly after it was published as I have great interest in the American colonial period and the eventual wars of the Revolution and 1812. To say that I was disappointed with the book is an understatement. In short, I was both amazed and underwhelmed.
Later, when studying for my masters degree in military history, the book reappeared as part of the required reading for one of the masters seminars. Then I was both amazed and dumbfounded, and very disappointed that the book was going to be used for class and instruction.
This is a badly researched, biased volume and to my mind has no place in any graduate-level curriculum as it is a politically correct diatribe which paints an incorrect picture not only of American colonial warfare but also of European warfare during the same period. The book is also an example of historical revisionism of the worst kind.

The book fails in three areas. First, it paints an inaccurate, one-sided picture of warfare on the North American continent during the colonial period, through the period of the American Revolution and ending with the war of 1812.

Second, the narrative ignores the warlike nature of the American Indian tribes in the eastern United States and Canada and the tribal warfare that went on between them with or without support or interference from the colonizing nations. Indian warfare was brutal, and involved the entire population of a tribe, including the women. Torture was a natural procedure amongst the tribes and Indian women took an active part in the `festivities' after a successful raid. This is ignored in the text which is amazing.

Third, the references to European military practice, such as the inaccurate statement that `Following the War of Spanish Succession (1701-1713), the direct effects of wars on Western Europe's civilian population were minimal.' I would suggest that the population of Saxony during the Seven Years War might disagree enthusiastically, as Frederick the Great's devastation of Saxony was not only efficient, but one of the worst atrocities of the 18th century.
At the end of that particular paragraph, another inaccurate statement concludes that `the Continental monarchies of the eighteenth century had no interest in radically affecting the status quo and thus would not use their armies against another monarch's civilian populace.' The employment by Austria and France, at least, of irregular troops who operated away from the main armies and their `operations' certainly would negate that statement. Their pay was largely, if not wholly, what they could find and loot, and no questions were asked how they got it. And it was definitely the object of Frederick the Great's enemies in the Seven Years War to destroy Prussia, or at the very least to render that emerging power unable to launch unprovoked attacks against its neighbors, as had been done to Austria in 1740 when Frederick wrested the rich province of Silesia from Austria.

Particular errors in the text further lessened the value of the book overall.

The naming of Captain Johann Ewald, a Hessian officer of jagers in the War of the Revolution, as an `irregular' is incorrect. The jagers were regular troops whose training was in light infantry operations and who could be employed in irregular warfare. The two are not the same thing.
Stating that `the French led the way among the Continental powers in forging a protocol for petite guerre-a protocol that put irregular war in their military establishment and legitimated it' is incorrect. The French followed the Austrians and formed their irregular units to combat the Austrian Border, or Grenz, troops that had wreaked havoc in enemy rear areas in previous wars.

Stating that the `Jager corps were home to the elite infantry of Europe' is an overstatement. The jagers could be elite troops and in some armies they were. However, that depended on who their commander was, how they were trained, and how expert they were in operations. The further statement that the jagers `were the training ground for the top officers in the Prussian Army' is a further stretch, as that army would be destroyed by the French in three weeks in 1806.

Two `translations' of military terms, jager and dragon, were somewhat inaccurate. Jager is a German word meaning `hunter', not `game warden' as stated in the text. The Turkish word `dragon', in reference to the root word for dragoon, is translated as `scum' which I was not able to find. What I did find, however, was that the term dragoon, originally a mounted infantryman, came from the French term `dragon' and that is still the French term for dragoon. I would suggest that the latter is the likely root for `dragoon.'

A minor fault is the repetitive use of the terms `paradigm' and `extirpate' (in its various forms) was particularly annoying and somewhat redundant.
Lastly, the lack of a bibliography at the end of the book was not very helpful. It is not necessary to produce one for any volume, but it surely helps the reader in further research if it is provided.

This book is definitely not recommended because of the errors in the text and because of the methodology employed. That being the case, this book cannot be used as a reference for the period in question.
