Tocqueville: The Ancien Régime and the French Revolution (Cambridge Texts in the History of Political Thought)From Brand: Cambrid

This new translation of an undisputed classic aims to be both accurate and readable. Tocqueville's subtlety of style and profundity of thought offer a challenge to readers as well as to translators. As both a Tocqueville scholar and an award-winning translator, Arthur Goldhammer is uniquely qualified for the task. In his Introduction, Jon Elster draws on his recent work to lay out the structure of Tocqueville's argument. Readers will appreciate The Ancien Régime and the French Revolution for its sense of irony as well as tragedy, for its deep insights into political psychology, and for its impassioned defense of liberty.

the foundation text in revolutionary studies
By drollere
tocqueville's "revolution" is often mentioned with admiration as an early history of the french revolution, but briefly and typically in a obligatory or deferential tone, before interest turns to taking sides in the contentious twists of interpretation among 20th century historians. in fact this brief analysis is a benchmark for revolution studies, drawing as it does fundamental conclusions from extensive documentary evidence and deep sociological insight.

many of tocqueville's observations have become commonplace in histories of the revolution: that many of the social and economic changes credited to the revolution were actually well under way before the revolution occurred; that the revolution dispensed with medieval and relict prerogatives while accelerating government centralization and power; that the revolution was possible because the central government had successfully fragmented the society into autonomous special interest groups (even within supposedly monolithic groups such as the nobility or urban elite); that inequitable privilege and taxation, applied tactically by the monarchy, was the principal engine of this social fragmentation; that media increased the social importance of liberal philosophers; that the revolution was not religious but proceeded in the same manner as a religious movement; that moderate concessions to change only accelerated the change that the concessions were intended to appease. one can make a summary list of tocqueville's assertions and position the political and methodological biases of every subsequent historian by noting which of tocqueville's claims are points of agreement or dispute. tocqueville's analysis is, in that sense, foundational.

the translation is generally good but not always consistent: at one place a footnote alerts the reader that the term "urban elites" is used because the term "bourgeoisie" would be imprecise and anachronistic; but then "bourgeoisie" is used elsewhere without comment. it would also have been helpful to signal inline the passages where tocqueville added a note or comment in his appendix; as it is, you must first review the comments and identify the references before you read each chapter. the index is generally good and the introduction, while too long, makes some useful points. these are all incidental issues given the superlative intellectual power of the text itself. highly recommended to any student of the french revolution.

A thought-provoking idea on just about every page.
By David W. Drake
Tocqueville is a very entertaining writer and his ideas about the continuity of France from the Ancien Regime through the 1850s are very insightful. Tocqueville is the kind of writer who leaves me thinking about things he said long after I've stopped reading it. This book introduced the idea that a revolution happens when a country has stopped being totally oppressed and begins to get some freedom. But there is much more to it than that. Also a good primer on what France was like just before and just after the Rewvolution.

Fascinating

This moves faster than you'd think and is very interesting. Given today's unease, it is a timely book as well.
