Renaissances: The One or the Many?, by Jack Goody

One of the most distinguished social scientists in the world addresses one of the central historical questions of the past millennium: does the European Renaissance deserve its unique status at the very heart of our notions of modernity? Jack Goody scrutinises the European model in relation to parallel renaissances that have taken place in other cultural areas, primarily Islam and China, and emphasises what Europe owed to non-European influences. Renaissances continues that strand of historical analysis critical of Eurocentrism that Goody has developed in recent works like The East and the West (1996) or The Theft of History (2006). This book is wide-ranging, powerful, deftly argued, and draws upon the author's long experience of working in Africa and elsewhere. Not since Toynbee in The Study of History has anybody attempted quite what Jack Goody is undertaking in Renaissances, and the result is as accessible as it is ambitious.

Review
"...a magisterial book..." -Times Literary Supplement

"...valuable and stimulating work." -Sumit Guha, Canadian Journal of History

"Jack Goody's Renaissances appears as the oeuvre of a senior scholar standing on the peak of a mountain and looking back over his journey with the broad perspective that only many years of scholarship can bring. Goody is well known and respected as an anthropologist of wide interests and skills, whose early work on Africa and later work on literacy have allowed him to become, more recently, a comparative scholar on a global scale." -Emily Michelson, The Journal of Modern History

"It is rare to find a monograph that is so passionately argued, and motivated by such a clear authorial vision."
-Carla S. Nappi,University of British Columbia

Superb study of renaissances across many cultures
By William Podmore
Jack Goody, Emeritus Professor of Social Anthropology at Cambridge University, has written a most engaging and enlightening book on renaissances. He contends that all literate societies have times of looking back, leading to a flowering of culture.

Chapter 1 examines the idea of renaissance. Chapter 2 studies Europe's first medical school, the University of Montpellier, and the Arabic and Jewish contributions to the rebirth of that knowledge. Chapter 3 compares renaissances and looks at the growth of secular knowledge. Chapters 4, 5, 6 and 7 look at the cultural histories of Islam, Judaism, India and China. Chapter 8 sums up.

Goody shows how the Italian Renaissance freed people from the limits imposed by the ruling religion. The Renaissance stands out because of the extent of the post-Roman decline and of Christianity's power. The Renaissance's suspension of belief opened up a more secular and humanistic way of thinking, giving more freedom to science and the arts. The supernatural hindered inquiry into the natural world by claiming that God had already answered all questions. The Renaissance opened up the wider world of pagan or polytheistic Greece and Rome, and allowed independent inquiry and the development of representational arts and the theatre. Religion gave way to science.

Also, autocracy gave way to democracy. As he writes, "Democracy is partly involved with secularity (not inevitably but as a tendency), because the rule of the people usually implies the actuality of a secular rather than a transcendental power."

Their empires led to Europe's states' taking a self-centred view of the world, for example, Arnold Toynbee stated that the Renaissance was `the natural expression of the western spirit'. Goody notes "the non-intrinsic nature of cultural supremacy, that is, it does not attribute advantage or backwardness to a permanent quality of the culture such as genius or spirit or mentality but to factors that can change over the course of time." Drawing a straight line between Antiquity and the Renaissance excludes non-European cultures from the growth of civilisation.

Culture flourished from the growth in manufacturing and international trade. As Goody writes, "Contact with these eastern cultures [Persia, India and China] helped stimulate the changes leading to the Italian Renaissance, that is to a resumption of trade, the rebirth of a wider approach, and a renewal of cultural contacts with the past and with the present." He concludes, "Europe was not alone, nor was it a cultural island."

Not convincing
By D Walls
Although it provides a lot of interesting information, this book was a great disappointment. Sir Jack Goody sees the European renaissance simply as a revival among others, and starts with a lot of talk about how the renaissance got influence from other cultures, like Islam, China etc. This is nothing new and any student of renaissance should know that. He continues with the worn out story that all other cultures are victims of euro centrism and ethnocentrism. He talks about renaissance, as it only was a revival of old knowledge, which of course has happened many times in many cultures. But the Italian/European renaissance was something much more profound which lead to reformation and the enlightenment in which anything could be challenged and questioned, leading to a secular society where nothing was holy. It was a rebirth that really led to something new, not just a revival. Ironically, in his eagerness to find proofs that the same things happened in the Muslim world he even calls the Wahhabis for reformers, while reactionaries would have been a more appropriate word!
What I was looking for was a study which analyzed the ideas and driving force behind the (European) renaissance and why this lead to the enlightenment, reformation and eventually to a secular democratic part of the world. This is actually relatively unique when you look at the world today and it cannot be explained only by saying that Europe has suppressed and exploited the rest of the world (although that is also true). I think this rather has to do with people's ideas about authority, religion, kinship and patrimonialism and how ideas in Europe helped to undermine the traditional religious and state authority. It is not an accident that a Freud grew up in Europe and not in India, Iraq or China. What about self-criticism that has been so important ingredient in the development of western world? Was this kind of scrutinizing the self and your own culture encouraged in the Muslim world, or in China? If you read a book like Jaques Waardenburg: "Muslim perception of other religions", you will doubt it.
Goody is discussing the relation between religion and political power, but completely ignore to discuss why a separation between the religious power and the political power (that which belong to God and that which belong to the Emperor) was possible in Christian Europe but has still mostly not been possible within the Muslim world. He also avoid to discuss why kinship and patrimonialism was mostly abolished in Europe, but not to the same degree in the Muslim world or any other part of the world (this very important aspect is analyzed by Francis Fukiyama in his latest book).
Mr Goody acknowledges the strength of the religious forces when he discuss the resurrection of Islamic states towards Arabic nationalism without the authoritarianism of monotheism (p 258). He stress that Islam and Christianity has a common source (Abrahamistic), but completely ignore the fact that Christianity was born out of scriptures (The Gospels) which in many ways are in complete opposition to the authoritarian world view of the Old Testament (later a more anti-authoritarian branch of Islam was developed in the Sufi tradition). Isn't it likely that this anti-authoritarian seed in Christianity contributed to the weakening of the religious power in Europe since it certainly has influenced thinking of its people? While Islam and the Koran is a very consistent (and authoritarian) ideology or message, the Bible is so full of contradictions, stressing authority and obedience in the Old Testament and love, individualism and antiauthoritarian views in the New Testament. The difference between these ideologies and the impact it might have had for the development is not discussed at all.
The books most interesting part is the chapters about India and China. However, while he indicates that the Italian renaissance was in some ways unique, he does not present any idea of why this was so. Even more surprising is that a Professor of Social Antropology do not seriously take into account the role of kinship and religions influence for the political development in various cultures.

Mismanagement of Marine Fisheries, by Alan Longhurst

Longhurst examines the proposition, central to fisheries science, that a fishery creates its own natural resource by the compensatory growth it induces in the fish, and that this is sustainable. His novel analysis of the reproductive ecology of bony fish of cooler seas offers some support for this, but a review of fisheries past and present confirms that sustainability is rarely achieved. The relatively open structure and strong variability of marine ecosystems is discussed in relation to the reliability of resources used by the industrial-level fishing that became globalised during the 20th century. This was associated with an extraordinary lack of regulation in most seas, and a widespread avoidance of regulation where it did exist. Sustained fisheries can only be expected where social conditions permit strict regulation and where politicians have no personal interest in outcomes despite current enthusiasm for ecosystem-based approaches or for transferable property rights.

Review
"A highly readable and insightful analysis of prominent failures in world fisheries management from an eminent marine scientist."
Peter Koeller, Bedford Institute of Oceanography, Dartmouth, N.S.

"This is great book that will challenge the cherished theories and beliefs of almost anyone working in the area of fisheries management. "Some of the shibboleths of the fisheries management and fisheries ecological communities he challenges include (1) fishing can be sustainable, (2) the basic assumptions of modern fisheries population dynamics models have any biological realism, (3) that the collapse of the Northern cod stock was simply overfishing and (4) except in the most extreme cases there is a relationship between spawning stock size and recruitment. "The book provides a valuable historical perspective on both marine ecosystems, and fisheries management. I highly recommend it to anyone interested in marine fisheries."
Professor Ray Hilborn, School of Aquatic and Fishery Sciences, University of Washington

"I say without hesitation this is a book that should be read by every scientist and, indeed every bureaucrat and person operating within the fishing industry and its associated sea-food industries.
Sidney Holt

About the Author
Alan Longhurst began his career in fisheries science, but is best known as a biological oceanographer, being the first Director of the Southwest Fisheries Science Center of the US NMFS in La Jolla, California, and later the Director-General of the Bedford Institute of Oceanography in Nova Scotia, Canada. He produced the first estimate of global plant production in the oceans using satellite imagery, and also quantified vertical carbon flux through the planktonic ecosystem. More recently, in reaction to disastrous Canadian management of NW Atlantic cod stocks, he has offered a number of critical reviews of several aspects of fishery management science. He retired in 1995 and now divides his time between south-west France and Nova Scotia.

Darwinism and its Discontents, by Michael Ruse

This book presents an ardent defense of Charles Darwin's theory of evolution against its many critics by one of the leading experts on this subject. Offering a clear and comprehensive exposition of the thinking of Darwin, Michael Ruse brings the story up to day, examining important issues such as the origins of life, the fossil record, the mechanism of natural selection, and rival theories such as punctuated equilibrium, the story of human evolution (including the recently found "hobbits," Homo floresiensis), fraud in biological science, literary approaches to evolution, and the philosophical and religious implications of Darwinism, notably a discussion of Creationism and its modern day offshoot, Intelligent Design Theory. Ruse draws upon the most recent discoveries, but writes with a minimum of jargon. His book will appeal to many readers, from professional biologists to concerned citizens who worry that Darwinism is a naturalistic religion that is forced on school children in face of their own deeply held Christian convictions. Openly revealing his own beliefs, Ruse 's aim throughout is to present information and critical tools so that the reader can make informed decisions for him or herself.

From Publishers Weekly
Ruse, a well-known evolutionary historian and philosopher, defends Darwin from all comers, whether religious critics; those who, like Gertrude Himmelfarb, have accused Darwin of being a second-rate scientist; or postmodernist critics who say science is a social construction and not objective truth. Ruse (Can a Darwinian Be a Christian?) expounds on why he accepts evolution as fact. Though he doesn't buy the argument that all science is merely a social construct, he acknowledges that Darwinism holds a mirror up to the times and reflects contemporary thinking, and he looks at the forms Darwinism has taken in philosophy, literature and popular culture. Some readers may think that Ruse, who freely and frequently admits that he isn't a Christian, doesn't quite provide a level playing field on which to confront some of his intellectual opponents, in particular the Christian philosopher Alvin Plantinga and the atheist scientist Richard Dawkins. Still, Ruse's agnosticism keeps him from being doctrinaire ("Perhaps there is a God on the other side... I do not know"). Some readers will struggle with Ruse's occasional philosophic density. Nevertheless, this should interest fans of the philosophy of science and readers caught up in the contemporary debate about evolution. (Aug.)

Review
"Anyone who wants to understand evolutionary theory and the fascinating issues that surround it, can find no better place than Michael Ruse's Darwinism and Its Discontents. He discusses the objections raised to evolutionary theory down through the most legitimate to those that are anything but legitimate. His discussions are fair, measured and informed. High school students, undergraduates and the public at large would find this book worth reading."
-David Hull, Northwestern University

"Of all the literally hundreds of books out there that claim to have the true, right or only line on Darwin, Ruse has the beating of them all. He shows the wonder in both the natural world and Darwin's efforts to understand it."
-Allan C. Hutchinson, Toronto Globe and Mail

"Darwinism and Its Discontents is vintage Ruse: clear, incisive, focused on fundamental and controversial topics, written with verve. Michael Ruse is a philosopher, comfortably at home with the biology, and sensitive to the religious controversies."
-Fancisco J. Ayala, University of California, Irvine

"Ruse is unique in his combined knowledge of evolutionary principles, history of science, philosophy, and theology, and he brings them all to bear with clarity and effect in evaluating the present-day status of evolutionary thought."
-Edward O. Wilson, Harvard University

"The enemies of a thorough-going Darwinism are many: fundamentalists who think it a damnable doctrine; social-constructionists who would drain away its blood; and even some evolutionary biologists who balk at taking the last step. Over the years, Michael Ruse has engaged them all with scholarship, intelligence, and wit--his most potent weapon. Now in a more synthetic mode, Darwinism and Its Discontents brilliantly marshals these instruments to disarm the recalcitrant and convince the fair minded. The book displays a humane thinker who yet flexes muscle and moxie."
-Robert J. Richards, University of Chicago

"Ruse, a well-known evolutionary historian and philosopher, defends Darwin from all comers, whether religious critics; those who have accused Darwin of being a second-rate scientist; or postmodernist critics who say science is a social construction and not objective truth...this should interest fans of the philosophy of science and readers caught up in the contemporary debate about evolution."
-Publishers Weekly

"Darwinism and Its Discontents is Ruse's most comprehensive look at Darwinism to date...He negotiates the terrains of history, philosophy, and theology well enough to offer cogent versions of the central issues and their multiple sides...For an introduction to the mainstream Darwinian view and its wider context, one might not find a better entrée than Ruse's account."
-Horace L. Fairlamb, University of Houston-Victoria, symploke

"Ruse is a skilled writer able to present the most intricate details of evolutionary theory in an understandable way. He is more than well-informed...this book offers a good selection and a relatively fair picture of standard criticisms of Darwinism...It should be read by anyone wishing to be introduced to or reminded of the 'state of the art' of the 'Darwin wars'. --Tomislav Bracanovic, University of Zagreb: Philosophy in Review

Good, Balanced Defense of Evolution from Critics.
By Kevin Currie-Knight
At a time when Richard Dawkins and Sam Harris are releasing books that are very anti-theistic in nature, a book like "Darwinism and It's Discontents" is timely, indeed. It's point is to offer a staunch defense of evolution and evolutionary theory (in the process, doubting that creationist theories hold any water), but at the same time, doing so in a way that does not NECESSARILY equate (as Dawkins does) evolution with atheism. In other words, this is truly a book defending evolution AS evoluiton, rather than getting into the ancillary (so Ruse thinks) theological debate.

And defend evolution he does - using very jargon-free and clear arguments and evidence. Each chapter addresses a particular "beef" that some have with evolution - is evolution really a scientifica theory?; Is it proven by the physical evidence?; Could it have produced life from non-life (abiogenesis)?; What, if anything, are the moral implications of evolution?

All of these, and more, are very well explored. Now that I have trotted out the questions, let me give a preview to the answers found in the book (though you will still have to read it to get Ruse's arguments for them):

Is evolution a scientific theory? Yes; while it started out more as a philosophic speculation, it has since become a very testable (verifiable and falsifiable) theory that can also be considered, in a sense, fact.

Has physical evidence shown evolution to be true? We all know that on a micro level, hardly anyone would deny this. But, says Ruse, we also have evidence of transitional forms, archeological evidence that fits perfectly into the evolutionary paradigm, and strong evidence as to how evolution physically works.

Can evolution produce life from non-life? Frankly, we are not sure yet, but a 'yes' answer looks promising.

What are the moral implications of evolution? Ruse trods through countless attempts by theorists as diverse as Spencer, Huxley, and E.O. Wilson to draw moral implications from evolution, but Ruse's final analysis suggests that no "ought" can be derived from an "is" without, itself, being a moral judgment. Ergo, evolution only has moral implications if you want it to. (And, yes, nonbelieving Ruse suggests that one can - very carefully, of course - be theistic and believe in evolution!).

All in all, a very well written and moderate defense of evolution. Unlike books by Dawkins, Harris, and, to a lesser extend, the philosopher Dan Dennett, this book is one that a thoughtful religionist could read without pulling one's hair out. In other words, Ruse is the unique type of author who can, at once, defend evolution deftly while also being able to speak maturely and non-condescendingly to critics of evolution

Adjudicating points of contention
By Dennis Littrell
In a previous book, Can a Darwinian Be a Christian? (2001), Michael Ruse reconciled the ways of Christianity to the fact of evolution. He did so by allowing for a largely symbolic reading of the Bible and by defining Christianity as a system of belief about matters beyond the reach of Darwinism, such as our having souls and being made in the image of God and being given heavenly or hellish eternal life in realms not subject to biological evolution.

Here Ruse adjudicates various disputes between Darwinism and its critics and among Darwinians themselves on such matters as natural selection (especially this), punctuated equilibrium, group selection, drift, reductionism, etc. Unfortunately I don't think he adds much that is new to the discussion, and his torturously "correct" navigation between believers and non-believers left this reader annoyed. Spill the beans! For example, state it clearly: Christianity that relies on a literal interpretation of the Bible is incompatible with Darwinism. Period. Add: Those who appreciate the fact of biological evolution cannot accept that man was made in a Christian God's image or that a personal God is, and has been, shaping events on this planet.

Ruse writes from the point of view of a historian of evolutionary science and as someone sympathetic with what I might call progressive Christianity, a Christianity that knows that the world was not made in six days and that the earth has been around for a few billion years and that God does not have a belly button or even an alimentary canal or a need for either. Ruse is an expert on Darwinism and its contemptuous history and he understands the major issues very well. He is the kind of writer who bends over backwards to be fair to his opposition, such as creationists and Intelligent Designers, as well as atheists like Richard Dawkins or agnostics like Stephen Jay Gould. He is also the kind of writer who equivocates a lot, whose instincts are to find common ground and to further responsible and honorable dialogue, which is the strength of this book.

He begins with a chapter demonstrating the Charles Darwin really does deserve the credit he gets for being the first to understand natural selection, which is the very heart and soul of evolutionary theory. He goes on to argue for "The Fact of Evolution" (the title of Chapter Two) while giving a hearing to creationist/ID people like Alvin Plantinga and Michael Behe. He follows with a discussion of the some of the problems surrounding "The Origin of Life" (Chapter Three). He ends the book with chapters ten, eleven and twelve on "Philosophy," "Literature," and "Religion." There is some interesting material on the epistemological ramifications of biological evolution and whether we can construct some sort of morality from Darwin's blueprint. (No!) He analyses Ian McEwan's contemporary novel, Enduring Love (1997) in terms of its relationship to Darwinism, and he dregs up some raucous anti-Darwinian quotes from George Bernard Shaw and recalls Samuel Butler's Erewhon (1872) amid a gloss about the differences between machines and organisms. In-between there is some interesting pro and con about familiar issues within evolutionary theory.

Ruse's style is a little long-winded and (typical of philosophers) weighted down with careful qualification--yet, at the same time, he is capable of wit and sharp expression. This is the sort of book that will appeal to those readers with philosophic, literary and historical inclinations. This is not a book for biological scientists or for those looking for cutting edge discussions of problems in evolutionary theory.

Three things:

(1) I am not enamored of the term "Darwinism" as a synonym for biological evolution. It is too restrictive both in terms of the ideas and manifestations of evolution, but also in terms of the historical record.

(2) While Ruse understands that the facts about our biological nature revealed by evolutionary biology do not necessarily support any kind of "ought" about how we should behave, he doesn't seem to realize (see pages189-193) that we can understand and forgive on a biological level while on a societal level we must throw the violent criminals into jail. There is no "very fine line" between knowledge of our biology and our ethics, and "Darwinian approaches to humankind certainly" do not "cross that line." (p. 193) "What is" is one thing. "What should be" is another. People crossing that blunt and clearly marked line do so on their own.

(3) Little light and certainly no resolution are brought to bear on the problem of evil and free will that Ruse addresses beginning on page 284. He brings the matter up because some people think that seeing the world from the view of biological evolution somehow supports evil in the world and argues against free will. The problem of evil is the result of the belief in a personal God who is all powerful and at the same time all compassionate and has nothing to do with biological evolution. Furthermore, the question of whether we have free will or whether it is just an illusion we cannot help but believe, is a philosophical problem and not a scientific one.

Know Evolution by the Opponents It Keeps
By Rob Hardy
Everyone knows that there are religious objections to Charles Darwin's ideas about evolution. Those who make them are the loudest of objectors to natural selection these days, but there have, in fact, been other sorts of objections, from philosophers, from students of social studies, from literary authors, and even some from biologists and those within the community of evolutionary studies. None have made much of a dent in the overall understanding of evolution, according to _Darwinism and Its Discontents_ (Cambridge University Press) by Michael Ruse, an authority on the history and philosophy of Darwinian evolutionary theory. It has not mattered much that the theory has spawned many objections; Ruse starts his book by quoting Daniel C. Dennett, who says that Darwin would get his award for the single best idea that anyone has ever had, and Ruse agrees. Nonetheless, this is a brisk if academic examination of who has been making the objections and why. Since evolution has yet to fall, and is still the cornerstone of biological understanding, learning what its detractors think can only increase our admiration for its power.

Darwin, after _The Origin of Species_, wrote specifically about the descent of humans, turning to sexual selection as well as natural selection. His fellow discoverer of evolution, Alfred Russel Wallace, insisted that many human features, including our big brains, could not have come from natural means, but Darwin was sure that humans were part of nature's processes. People accepted evolution overwhelmingly, but they rejected Darwin's explanation of evolution by natural selection, finding that some force beyond simple adaptation (whether natural or divine) was necessary. It was not until the genetic laws of Mendel were rediscovered in the twentieth century that population genetics was advanced as the internal mechanism that would allow for variation and selection to occur. Ruse, in a chapter titled "The Fact of Evolution" not only summarizes the evidence for the theory (of course, Ruse has to explain that "theory" does not mean "hypothesis") which Darwin gave, but also the evidence which genetic studies now give. One chapter is an explicit rebuttal of the title of a famous creationist book _Evolution: The Fossils Say No!_, and shows that by multiple methods, fossils, cladistic analyses, molecular clocks, and other independent means of verification, evolution is as soundly based as gravitation. This is not to say that all evolutionists agree, but the creationists are wrong to take such disagreements as meaning that evolution is all in a shambles. Ruse reviews limitations and restrictions on the theory, and also the frauds and hoaxes that have marred its history.

Ruse has a chapter on the effects of evolution on literature (Shaw hated it and blamed Darwinism for World War One) and on philosophy, where it can be shown to support a commonsense morality rather than merely the "social Darwinism" that has been properly criticized ever since those with power have used natural selection as a justification for that power. A final chapter on religion makes clear that Darwinism is only a trouble for biblical literalists; other Christians may, for instance, read Genesis with a deeper meaning about our imperfect natures and our obligations to a creator and his creation. "None of this," Ruse says, "is in any way denied or obscured by Darwinism," although trying to impose concepts like original sin onto genetic inheritance strike him as "rather strained". Creationism's new embodiment in "Intelligent Design" is mentioned, but it cannot lead to any new scientific predictions, as evolution has successfully and repeatedly done, and it "flunks just about all the epistemic criteria for good science." Finally, Ruse concludes that Darwinism has no answer to give about the presence or absence of gods, but we should be wary of any explanation that purports to explain everything. That's not what evolution does, and this is not one of its weaknesses, but a strength. Through the efforts of its discontents as Ruse shows them in many fields, the discipline of evolution is revealed as far stronger and more reliable than if it had no opposition.

It only has the English to Turkish translations just like it describes. So you can't look up anything the reverse way. Kind of disappointing because the dictionary is useless for translating if you don't have both. There are limited resources for Turkish dictionaries in the United States, so I don't regret my purchase and am not returning it. Just wish it had more.

I really wish there was the same book, the other way around, Turkish-English, I would buy it immediatley, but I cant find it. If ANYONE knows if the other book exists, please comment!

The Evidence for God: Religious Knowledge Reexamined, by Paul K. Moser

If God exists, where can we find adequate evidence for God's existence? In this book, Paul Moser offers a new perspective on the evidence for God that centers on a morally robust version of theism that is cognitively resilient. The resulting evidence for God is not speculative, abstract, or casual. Rather, it is morally and existentially challenging to humans, as they themselves responsively and willingly become evidence of God's reality in receiving and reflecting God's moral character for others. Moser calls this "personifying evidence of God," because it requires the evidence to be personified in an intentional agent - such as a human - and thereby to be inherent evidence of an intentional agent. Contrasting this approach with skepticism, scientific naturalism, fideism, and natural theology, Moser also grapples with the potential problems of divine hiddenness, religious diversity, and vast evil.

Review
"There is much in this readable and pointed book that will interest and challenge both philosophers and theologians, and the epistemological reorientation Moser develops has the potential to significantly alter debates in current philosophy of religion, and for the better. --Review of Metaphysics

"This is a powerful and highly thought-provoking book, always meticulously argued, but also written with the kind of overt emotional commitment that is rare in contemporary philosophy of religion, particularly that dealing with epistemological questions." --TLS

the content is a gem
By Amazon Customer
I ordered this book on a whim and am surprised that no one has reviewed it yet. I will do a more detailed review later, but have some review points for an interested reader:

1. The main point of the book, that God does reveal himself to the world, but not on our terms, is salient. Sounds God-worthy. God exhibits His existence in a life submitted to him. We, morally committed to Christ's purposes, are the evidence to the world (and to ourselves)of God's existence. He builds on this point and gives the core idea a lot of substance. Well worth reading.

2. Why four stars and not five? Frankly, Moser is an academian and writes like one. His sentence structures are too long and complex. I sometimes find myself re-reading a sentence many times to figure out what he's saying. The only reason I am working thru this book (about 2/3rds done) is because the content is rewarding and may in the final analysis be correct!

3. This book creates a path that seems viable. The naturalists want the Christian world to confront them on their terms. When Christians debate atheists to provide objective truth for God's existence, they always get smeared. It's embarrasssing to watch the gyrations that Christians go through to prove God from a worldly aspect. This book provides an alternative viewpoint that respects God, respects our responsibility toward God, and works out faith in a realistic fashion.

I'd like to hear the take of others on Moser's work. I find it a relief from the worn out apologetics found in popular Christian books. Ken

Disappointing
By Reader
In the `The Evidence for God' Paul Moser argues in favour of a position that he refers to as volitional theism. Roughly stated volitional theism is a variant of religious experience wherein the onus for divine disclosure is on God rather than man. That is, God reaches out in the appropriate way and at the appropriate time to call receptive agents into a transforming relationship with him. The resultant transformed agents then provide evidence for the existence of God.

Moser's correctly notes that standard philosophical debates over the existence of God are often framed in a detached arms-length manner, a manner which presupposes that the answer to the question is causally ineffective with regard to the inquirer. Moser contends, rightfully I believe, that this human-centric approach is misguided. If there is an all-powerful all good God why would he not set the conditions for his disclosure and why would not an aspect of that disclosure entail responsiveness.

I bought this book after reading a similar essay by Moser in `God is good God is Great'. Despite being generally sympathetic to Moser's thesis I was disappointed with the text. While Moser may well be an interesting and informed thinker he is limited by his byzantine writing style - verbose, rambling and repetitive. Despite having an interest, and a background, in this area I found it is difficult and frustrating read. I am hard pressed to envision an audience for this book. The laymen will likely be lost in Moser's overly qualified language and vacuous prose, while the subject matter expert will be frustrated by his pedantic style.

Ultimately, even when his stylistic difficulties are overcome, Moser seems to be making a rather trivial and uncontentious claim - God reaches out to agents receptive to his call, agents who in turn are transformed as a result of their response. While important, this is far from an original claim, indeed it has been a standard assumption of mainstream Christianity (Catholic/Orthodox and certain strands of Protestantism) that God's love is in-large non-coercive.

Overall, I can not recommend this book. Edited down to a paper-length piece it would be an OK read. As is, it is likely a pass.

Interesting Evidence for Christian Theism
By Mike Robinson
Paul K. Moser (Professor & Chairperson Dept. of Philosophy: Loyola University, Chicago) relates epistemic issues to the evidence for the existence of God with masterly skill in "The Evidence for God: Religious Knowledge Reexamined." Moser, author of "The Elusive God," paints a far more textured picture of epistemology's crucial role in determining genuine evidence for the existence of the Christian God than the majority of contemporary apologists.

Along the way Professor Moser attempts to deflate various arguments for theism that play down the ontic majesty of the true and living God. Additionally he cogently refutes naturalism with precision and care (pp. 46-84). His persuasive and inexpugnable contestations refuting sundry schools of naturalism alone make this volume worth purchasing. Professor Moser also convincingly discredits fideism as he provides the reader with a thoughtful case against blind faith.

The book "develops volitional theism against the background that includes critical assessment of prominent competing positions" (Naturalism, Fideism, Traditional Proofs, Plantinga's epistemology - p. 45).

The book's claims are launched with an erudite quote from H.H. Farmer: "Many questions are answered wrongly, not because the evidence is contradictory or inadequate, but because the mind through its fundamental dispositions and presuppositions is out of focus with the only kind of evidence which is really available" (p. 1).

Moser controverts numerous forms of Naturalism including:

- Quine's (p. 68-70)
- Ontological Naturalism
a. Eliminative ontological naturalism
b. Noneliminative reductive ontological naturalism
c. Noneliminative nonreductive ontological naturalism
- Methodological naturalism in three dominant forms.
All this within the context of a refutation of Scientism (pp. 76-87) while he opposes the empirical attempt to prove the existence of God (p. 87).

The author rejects classical proofs (pp. 142-182) along with historical and evidential methods as systems that prove too little (finite data V. an infinite ontology: the God of Christian Theism), yet he admits to their possible psychological or aesthetic apologetic value (p. 160). The author also denies that Behe's irreducible complexity and ID science are epistemically satisfying approaches (p. 166-167).

The often astute professor alogically and unbiblically rejects God's sovereignty in the salvation of souls and the enlightening of minds (pp. 131-142 and misc.). He builds a neurasthenic case for the divine call that results in "nonargument evidence of God's reality" not as "volitionally static" forasmuch as we need to "avoid ... a bias against evidence of the divine reality that comes from the volitional pressure of a transcendent call and the resulting transformation of a willing human recipient who thereby becomes a personifying evidence of God's reality" (p. 150). Nonetheless Moser's previous arguments against traditional proofs (finite, mutable, perishing material things lack the epistemic ability and ontic necessities to prove an infinite, immutable, imperishable God) cuts off the branch he's resting his arguments on: Christians become the "evidence of God's reality in receiving and reflecting God's moral character to others" (p. ix); inasmuch as Christians are also mutable and finite, thus under Moser's epistemic scrutiny, they fail to offer proof for the awesome infinite and immutable God revealed in scripture. The professor's argument provides the grounds that confute his own position.

The author claims that the evidence that has epistemically virtuous rights streams from the personal, perfectly loving God who alone deserves our worship and obedience. He maintains that this is the only justifiable evidence because God is elusive and all that is within the cosmos is epistemically diminutive. The seeker should open his heart and find salient evidence for the reality of God in the lives of believers who exhibit the love that they have received from the Lord. I personally haven't met a fellow Christian who lived a life that is morally adequate enough to be proof for the existence of God; furthermore I have not observed the love of a believer that was so impressive as to compel one to believe in God. The only moral source of love that compels saving faith is found in Christ Jesus.

Moser offers a formidable case against fideism and mysticism (p. 88-125), but his central allegation against classical & evidential proofs implies that he's one who rejects propositional and evidential proof, so he seems to slide into a type of moderate fideism himself, although he avouches "moderate evidentialism" (p. 135). He advocates the amorphous view that "God's reality is increasingly available and salient to me as I, myself, am increasingly willing to become such evidence--that is evidence of God's reality." This contention is his chief argument for Christian theism (p. 172).
One reason Moser contends that God's existence cannot be proved in propositional apologetic terms is: God is epistemically veiled so the lives of believers are the only sufficient evidence that is available, moreover we need to "let God be God" (p. 28). God is concealed since "the reality of the God is knowable firsthand by humans on the basis of salient and conclusive, if elusive, evidence."

The author endeavors to rebut the Reformed view of soteriology in relation to apologetic pursuits as he asserts that some "people assume that God would have a magic cognitive bullet in divine self-revelation whereby God guarantees that the divinely offered evidence of God's existence will actually be willingly received by humans. Sometimes this dubious assumption is clothed in talk of `divine sovereignty,' but this approach, in any case, involves a serious mistake" (pp. 33-34). However Romans chapter one informs the world that all men know that God exists but they suppress the truth in unrighteousness; furthermore the totality of holy writ discloses the idea that God is the agent who opens the human heart and calls men to Himself by grace alone.

The professor states: "Conclusive firsthand evidence for divine reality is, I'll contend, purposively available to humans, that is, available in a way, and only in a way, that accommodates the distinctive purposes of a perfectly loving God. The latter purposes, we'll see, would aim non-coercively but authoritatively to transform human purposes to agree with divine purposes, despite human resistance."

Moser's work may not have compelling positive and direct proof for theism but he does present an extremely effective refutation of naturalism and fideism along with a moderate challenge to the traditional arguments for God's existence. Even though I affirm a dissimilar apologetic method and epistemic approach, I enjoyed this volume immensely and gained additional insight in ways to defend the faith.

My method advocates a certain argument for the existence of God. Additionally in contrast to Moser I argue that God alone furnishes all the a priori essentials for the necessary epistemic equipment utinlized in all science and research. God has the ontic attributes of omniscience, immutability, and omnipotence (universal reach) to be the ground for the immaterial universal and immutable rational and ethical necessities. Any position that rejects Christian theism cannot be true (see my book: "A Letter to An Atheist Nation" by Mike A Robinson); thus whatever evidence one discovers, one must discern and process that evidence with the rational tools noted above.
