This has got to be one of the most boring plays I've ever read in my life. It renders some great analysis, especially character wise, but it's just so monotone and so removed that it's very hard to care for any of the characters. For those who have to read it for class (like me), I suggest watching the Ralph Fiennes movie, which is an immaculate adaptation of the play, set in modern times, that might make the analysis a lot easier.

About the Author
Jeremy Gans is Associate Professor at Melbourne Law School. He has taught courses on criminal law, evidence law, criminal procedure, sentencing law and expert evidence. In 2007, he was appointed as the first human rights adviser to the Victorian Parliament's Scrutiny of Acts and Regulations Committee, and he has recently acted as the principal consultant to that Committee's review of the Victorian Charter. In 2010, he was nominated as a fellow of the Australian Academy of Law. He is admitted to practise in the Supreme Court of Victoria.

Great Introduction to Mathematical Method

I am reading a great book that is in author's words intended for undergraduate students of mathematics, but that in my opinion offers much more to a motivated reader.

"How to Think Like Mathematician" by Dr. Kevin Houston is a very engaging, readable and pragmatic text on mathematical "technique". It is a non-pompous, well written, valuable, easy to follow and understand valuable set of lessons and tips on understanding and adopting mathematical method, language, theorems, proofs and techniques.

It is an introductory text, so for more in depth treatment of the subjects such as proofs and number theory you may need to look further into books such as Mathematical Proofs: A Transition to Advanced Mathematics (2nd Edition) orThe Princeton Companion to Mathematics but if you are looking to understand the mathematical method and how to be able to read and write "serious" math this is an ideal book.

I specially have to point out Dr. Houston's writing style - it is engaging, humorous, but substantial, pedagogical and never trivial.

Exercises with no solutions

I have just started reading this book, in which the author strongly encourages the reader to do all of the exercises. Upon finishing the first exercise, I went to check my answers, and found that there were no solutions provided in the book to any of the exercises that appear in any of the chapters. After doing some research online, I found that the author has his own website and has since provided a PDF with the solutions to many of the exercises. I'm not sure if all of them are covered, but the list of solutions does appear to be quite extensive. So, in case you were like me and were wondering if your solutions were correct, you can check your answers by downloading the PDF at [...]

Good book. Really helped me out.

This book and the paper "Lockhart's Lament" really helped me understand what real Math is about, at least at a very basic level. I was ineptly fumbling through my math classes before I read both. Lockhart's Lament is freely available from the AMA and I highly recommend it to anyone starting in math.

Ira M. Lapidus is Professor Emeritus of History at the University of California, Berkeley. Throughout his long and illustrious career he has published extensively. His abiding interest has been the relationships among families, tribes, religious communities, cities and states. This is exemplified in his current work and previous publications, including Muslim Cities in the Later Middle Ages (1967, 1984), Middle Eastern Cities (edited, 1969), Contemporary Islamic Movements in Historical Perspective (1983), Islam, Politics and Social Movements, co-edited with Edmund Burke (1988), A History of Islamic Societies (1988, 2002), and Islamic Societies to the Nineteenth Century: A Global History (2012).

Excellent Islamic History Book

I am Muslim and thought this book gave a very straightforward, honest, and neutral history of Islam. The author is a non-Muslim scholar of Islam much like Karen Armstrong, John Esposito, William Montgomery Watt, and others. I really appreciate this book as the author writes many wonderful things, especially about the life of Prophet Muhammad and the Qur'an.

Some Fascinating Stuff

I heard this author speak on NPR years ago, and at the time his book had not been published. I waited for years, and when I finally found it I was not disappointed. He made me think about night and how it affected the people in the early Middle Ages in ways I never had before. Well researched and great use of historical material, but overly wordy and written in an awkward academic style. There's no need to say "In the following chapter I will show that..." just DO it! But if you can push past this the information contained in the book will fascinate.

As a former history major, this is the kind of book I always thought I would read post-college but rarely do. It's engrossing and truly interesting. The writing is a little academic but not so dense as to be impenetrable for folks who have a basic knowledge of history and religion. I highly recommend it.

As deep as you want it to be

Very scholarly. The way I read a book like this is I skim over the parts that don't really interest me, while slowing down to focus and absorb the bits I do find interesting. I like that it has plenty of intext and regular citations that allow me to investigate a point farther if I so choose.

About the Author
Edward James is Professor of Medieval History at University College Dublin. He won the University of California's Eaton Prize for his book Science Fiction in the Twentieth Century (1994) and a Hugo Award for (jointly) editing The Cambridge Companion to Science Fiction. He co-wrote, with Farah Mendlesohn, A Short History of Fantasy (2009) and he has co-edited a number of other books, all of them essay collections, with Farah Mendlesohn and others. One of these is the first and only academic book on Terry Pratchett, called Terry Pratchett: Guilty of Literature (first edition 2000, shortlisted for a Hugo Award in 2001). He is currently working on book-length studies of Gregory of Tours and Lois McMaster Bujold.

Farah Mendlesohn is Reader in Science Fiction and Fantasy at Middlesex University. She was editor of Foundation: The International Review of Science Fiction from 2001 to 2007 and has also edited or co-edited several collections of essays, including Terry Pratchett: Guilty of Literature (with Edward James, first edition 2000, shortlisted for a Hugo Award in 2001). In 2003 she co-edited The Cambridge Companion to Science Fiction with Edward James (which won the Hugo Award for Best Related Book at the 2005 World Science Fiction Convention). She has edited two anthologies of original science fiction and fantasy, including Glorifying Terrorism in 2007, and co-wrote A Short History of Fantasy (with Edward James, 2009). She is probably best known for her book Rhetorics of Fantasy (2008), which is recognised as one of the most significant contributions to the study of fantasy and was shortlisted for several awards, winning the British Science Fiction Association award. She is currently working on a book on children's fantasy for Cambridge University Press (with Michael Levey) and on a study of the children's writer Geoffrey Trease.

Great Study Resource!

Bought this book for a course on speculative fiction. Having very little prior knowledge on the genre, I found this book an excellent study resource for the fantasy aspect. The critical articles are all manageable (averaging about 10 pages each) so they are easy to digest and understand. I definitely recommend the book for students new to the critical study of fantasy.

High-quality essays exploring the diachronic and synchronic elements of fantasy as a critical genre. Looks backward toward fantasy's origins and forward into the subgenres that have emerged from the larger umbrella of Fantasy Fiction. Only flaw, could go deeper into differences between national and ethnic appearances of fantasy fiction, including the shared commonalities as well as the divergences. Would love to see a more equitable treatment of international (non-Western) fantasy characteristics and development.

This was a great read, but my Kindle version was flawed by a random appearance of fat parentheses in many of the words, which created a stumbling block in reading this dense work. I still have no idea what some of the words are supposed to be, since they are both Arabic and parenthetical!

Readable and precise

Clark is one of those few scholars who can present a complicated topic in a very accessible way. She touches on the most important and interesting areas of child language acquisition, citing others' studies as well as her own research. You don't need any previous knowledge of this field to enjoy this book. I highly recommend it!

Heavy on data, not so much on readability

Although it was refreshing to read an account of language acquisition from the point of the view of Pragmatics, I felt the text was very dense and not organized well within the chapters. Dr. Clark includes information about many relevant experiments, but at times it was hard to distinguish her own interpretations from paraphrased citations. The chart dealing with phonetics also had quite a few errors.
I hope the second edition turns out to be better than this one!
