One of the most valuable ESL resources I have seen.

Imaginative, interesting, engaging and well organized this book is one of the most valuable resources I have seen in nearly three years of full time ESL teaching. The book is divided into two parts.Part One provides a clear and concise introduction to grammar teaching in the foreign language classroom, a very useful guide to designing and presenting grammar-practice activities and some tips for getting the most out of coursebook exercises. The heart of the book, however, is Part Two which consists of nearly 200 game-like grammar practice activities. The activities are grouped into sections according to grammatical categories. The categories are ordered alphabetically and cross-referenced in the text. The descriptions of the activities are accompanied, where appropriate, by reproducable sample texts and visuals. The activities are not classified by proficiency level or age and the author encourages teachers to adapt them to suit their own students. I have found that most of the activities are readily adaptable to different levels, and although most as presented in the book seem orientated toward adult students I have successfully adapted many for use with teenagers and younger children. Likewise the activities are not classified by skill practiced as many are designed or can be adapted to practise any or all of the four skills. This book is also exceptional in that it doesn't fall foul of that ill which inexplicably plagues many similar books - a cumbersome and unwieldy index. The index in this book, although perhaps not quite as complete as it could be, is among the very best I have seen in this type of publication. A single alphabetical list identifies activities by term, topic and title. In addition there is a clear list of contents at the front of the book. The book's easy-to-use format, comprehensive coverage, sturdy paperback construction and handy size make it an indispensable addition to any ESL teacher's tool-kit.

A Must for Your ESL Library!

I borrowed a copy from my ESL instructor while student-teaching. It is FANTASTIC. I have found that the activities proposed in the book can also be modified to fit another activity -- or to even get my own creative juices flowing. There have been times when I felt overwhelmed by all the good examples and couldn't pick just one. It's easy to carry and pack -- don't leave home without it!

A Helpful Resource

This book is packed full of useful grammar activities. They are easily classified according to grammar point and can be easily searched for use. I've used the activities numerous times, and there are a lot of great ideas in this book. The only thing that isn't so great is that the pictures have a late 70's or early 80's look, but it's not such a big problem since you can easily get pictures out of magazines or other such resources. Also, the English featured here is British English, so if you're teaching American English, you have to adjust some of the phrases or vocabulary. Other than that, it's great. Check it out.

About the Author
Roel Snieder holds the Keck Foundation Endowed Chair of Basic Exploration Science at the Colorado School of Mines. In 1984 he received a Masters degree in Geophysical Fluid Dynamics from Princeton University, and in 1987 a Ph.D. in seismology from Utrecht University. For this work he received the Vening Meinesz award from the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research. In 1988 he worked as a postdoctoral fellow at the Université Paris VI, and was appointed in 1989 as associate professor at Utrecht University. In 1993 he was promoted to full professor of seismology at Utrecht University, where from 1997-2000 he served as Dean of the Faculty of Earth Sciences. In 2000 he was elected as Fellow of the American Geophysical Union. He is also the author of A Guided Tour of Mathematical Methods: For the Physical Sciences (also published by Cambridge University Press). Ken Larner is University Emeritus Professor of Geophysics at the Colorado School of Mines (CSM). He received the degree of geophysical engineer from CSM in 1960 and a Ph.D. in geophysics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1970. During his final nine years with Western Geophysical Company (1970-1988), he was vice president for geophysical research, leaving to become the Charles Henry Green Professor of Exploration Geophysics at CSM (1988-2004). He served as president of the Society of Exploration Geophysicists (SEG) in 1988-89. In 1996 he received the SEG's highest award, the Maurice Ewing Gold Medal, and in 2003 the Kapitsa Gold Medal of the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences.

Every undergraduate should be armed with a good dictionary, a good thesaurus, and a copy of Strunk and White. Every graduate student should have those plus The Art of Being a Scientist. It is not necessary to read it cover to cover. Read the section(s) which apply to your situation. Each section is short, easy to digest, and contains essential information along with helpful hints. If you are preparing for research in any way (in any field) or if you are a young researcher, you should have this book.

Why NATO Endures examines military alliances and their role in international relations, developing two themes. The first is that the Atlantic Alliance, also known as NATO, has become something very different from virtually all pre-1939 alliances and many contemporary alliances. The members of early alliances frequently feared their allies as much if not more than their enemies, viewing them as temporary accomplices and future rivals. In contrast, NATO members were almost all democracies that encouraged each other to grow stronger. The book's second theme is that NATO, as an alliance of democracies, has developed hidden strengths that have allowed it to endure for roughly 60 years, unlike most other alliances, which often broke apart within a few years. Democracies can and do disagree with one another, but they do not fear each other. They also need the approval of other democracies as they conduct their foreign policies. These traits constitute built-in, self-healing tendencies, which is why NATO endures.

About the Author
Wallace J. Thies is a Yale Ph.D. who has held full-time teaching positions in political science at the University of Connecticut (Storrs), the University of California, Berkeley, and the Catholic University of America. Why NATO Endures is his third book. His two previous books are When Governments Collide: Coercion and Diplomacy in the Vietnam Conflict (1980) and Friendly Rivals: Bargaining and Burden-Shifting in NATO (2003). He has also published articles in the Journal of Conflict Resolution, Journal of Strategic Studies, International Interactions, Comparative Strategy, and European Security. He has also served as an International Affairs Fellow of the Council on Foreign Relations, working at the US Department of State, Bureau of Politico-Military Affairs, and a NATO Research Fellow.

This book examines the relationship between demographic growth and economic development in eight Arab countries. Despite a slowdown in demographic growth, as a result of the change in the age structure of the population, the labor force is increasing rapidly. In other parts of the world, similar developments have enhanced economic growth. In the Arab world, however, many of the opportunities presented by demographic transition are being lost, resulting in serious threats to the political stability of the region. The main reason for this is that the region has missed out on industrialization. The book goes beyond conventional analysis to ask two closely related questions. The first is, why were governments so slow in tackling stability? The second is, why has the response been similar in apparently different economies? Answers are provided using new literature in economics and economic history.

About the Author
Paul Rivlin is the author of three books: The Dynamics of Economic Policy Making in Egypt (1985), The Israeli Economy (1992) and Economic Policy and Performance in the Arab World (2001), as well as numerous monographs, papers, contributions to books, and reports on economic development in the Middle East and on international energy markets, defence, and trade economics. Educated at Cambridge, Harvard and London universities, he taught undergraduate and graduate courses on Middle East Economics at Tel Aviv and Ben Gurion universities and has been a Visiting Professor of Economics at Emory University. He has lectured in the United States, China, India, Japan and Europe.

Time for a revised edition

p.1 "The main reason for this situation is that the region has missed out on the Industrial Revolution ..."

Perhaps they have missed out on heavy manufacturing, but I think they have electricity, running water, phone and Internet service - they are hardly absent from the Industrial Revolution.

In a revision of this book please consider the arguments of Alvin Toffler in his 'The Third Wave' as to the ways in which industrialization affects both the culture of a country and what obstacles it places in the way to a transition into an information economy.

In 'The Arab World Unbound' the author talks about the emerging light manufacturing of consumer products that can be more cheaply produced locally than imported. All as a result of country specific penetration of international consumer brands.

The Wikipedia entries on Nazareth, Ramallah, and Amman,Jordan talk about high-tech firms that have taken a foothold in each of these Arab economies. All of which are items for further exploration in a revision of this book.

The Wikipedia entry on the Economy of Egypt talks about heavy industries and their development with that country. Again, something to consider further.

p. 39 "Governance has long been recognized as a key issue in economic development. The main issues are the processes by which governments are chosen ..."

Funny, I would have thought along a different line. I would want to know about 1) the enforceability of property rights; 2) the time it takes to get water and electric service to a commercial site, and the quality of supply, reliability of supply and price; 3) phone and Internet service to a commercial site in terms of time to arrive, price, quality and reliability of service. Then I would want to know if someone steals from me will the police go and chase the thief and get my stuff back; and finally how long it takes to get enforcement in a court of law or any other enforcement process for a contract for the sale of goods or services.

I wouldn't care about governance as much as I would worry about whether there was a commercial environment that works.

FAILURE OF CAMBRIDGE UNIVERSITY PRESS TO PROOF READ THE BOOK PRIOR TO PRINTING AND DISTRIBUTION.

p. 61On this page the author talks about nine poorer Arab states and then about fifteen Arab states without telling me exactly which nine Arab states and which fifteen Arab states. Please tell me as I would like to know.

p. 205 At the bottom of the page the author writes "Furthermore, the share of the public sector in total investment fell from 16 percent in 1987 to 16 percent in 1987." Please get that proof reader on the line and ask what they deleted by mistake.

If the author wishes to continue along his econometric path of enquiry I would like to see that expanded to include Information Technology such that it include a discussion on:

1) high-tech firms in Nazareth, Ramallah, and Amman,Jordan;
2) Internet penetration in each country reported on;
3) Books written or translated into Arabic that deal with some form of high-tech; and
4) advancements in the area of educational programs that have the objective of producing graduates to fill various information technology jobs.

p. 215 "There is a widespread, if not universal, agreement on the need to create a Palestinian state in the West Bank and Gaza." I think I would like to see in a revised edition of this book aq separation of Gaza and the PA in the form of separate discussions of each place. While I think that Gaza will continue on as a separate entity, the future of the PA is very much in doubt and I see several possibilities for where that will go.

Now, one of the handicaps the region faces in terms of economic science is its lack of access to the literature in economics; something that the author did not discuss. They really don't have the tools to work with. The lack of such basics as an Arabic translation of Alfred Marshall's 'Principles of Economics' would be a place to start as there is a whole library of economic classics to import into Arabic thought. Where is a translation of Adam Smith's 'Wealth of Nations'? Well, that's part of the problem. These are fundamental intellectual starting points and something that needss to happen in Arabic. Since the author teaches at Tel Aviv University he can ask himself about the lack of Hebrew translations of the same books and then he will understand the problem of economic literacy in the Arabic speaking world.

No one can say that the tools to do this sort of thing cheaply are not available, because they are. What I would like to read in a 2nd edition would be some idea of where he would suggest people to start. After all, the same works that are lacking in Hebrew are the same works that are lacking in Arabic.

About the Author
William Bechtel is professor of philosophy and science studies at the University of California, San Diego. He is the author and editor of many books, including Discovering Complexity (with Robert C. Richardson, 1993) and Connectionism and the Mind (with Adele Abrahamsen, 2002), and he is editor of the journal Philosophical Psychology. He is the current chair of the Cognitive Science Society and past president of the Society for Philosophy and Psychology and the Southern Society for Philosophy and Psychology.

Excellent Account of the Formation of Cell Biology

Bechtel provides a well-organized history of the development of modern cell biology (1940-1960). The critical struggles of the central minds involved in perfecting techniques, gathering new data, and interpreting that data is presented in an exceedingly clear manner. While I initially picked up the book to learn more about the history of the major discoveries in cell biology, I also appreciated Bechtel's philosophical considerations: one of his principal goals of the book is to use the subject as a case-study in mechanistic modes of thought in hopes of contributing to future efforts at advancing a modern mechanistic philosophy. Some may not sympathize with that particular agenda, but I think Bechtel sufficiently distinguishes between his commentary and the views of the scientists to make it worthwhile. Also worth noting is Bechtel's use of footnotes which seems to be in good proportion and offers the more assiduous reader occasional anecdotes and additional perspective.

Some basic background in biology (e.g., familiarity with major metabolic pathways, organelle structures and compositions) is presumed of the reader.
