About the Author
Steve Selvin is Professor of Biostatistics and Epidemiology at the University of California, Berkeley. He has received two university teaching awards and is a member of the ASPH/Pfizer Public Health Academy of Distinguished Teachers.

The book provides a good introduction to survival analysis concepts. The author really goes out of his way to describe as clearly as possible but succinctly what the underlying principles are, both in word as in mathematical formula. All discussed concepts and formula's are accompanied by examples, which are presented in detail. Mathematical formula's are kept to the strictly necessary without making things simpler then they are (no easy feat but well balanced in this book).

However, what really makes this book stand out is it's enthusiastic but critical voice on the presented techniques and the frequently repeated warnings on checking assumptions. Also, the author often makes seemingly offhand comments on e.g. the subjectivity of certain aspects of analysis (e.g. evaluation of residuals or of model selection) which enriches the text enormously. These things are often missing from statistical text books.

I think this book can serve very well both as a textbook for a course as well as an introduction to survival analysis for people with a working knowledge of basic mathematics or statistics. It's a breeze if you're well versed in other domains of statistics and look for info on survival analysis. It's however not a cookbook with step by step recipes. A small tutorial in R is provided at the end but more as an appetizer. But that is simply not the scope of the book as the author clearly states.

At the end of the day, it's simply a well written book.

Note on Kindle edition: the conversion to kindle is one of the best I've seen for a technically oriented book (but maybe I haven't seen enough of them yet). Graphs and formulas are easily readable in the topaz format.

Not the right focus as a practical guide

Compared with other books on survival analysis, this is just an okay book. I actually find it difficult to understand some of the passage probably because the author tries to write to people with "minimal" statistical knowledge. (e.g. p194 when he tries to explain confounding or p196-7 when he tries to explain the loss of statistical power) I am surprised to find the book contains a whole chapter on life table. On the positive side, it is a good description of what life table is and how to use it; on the negative side, it is not commonly used in survival analysis outside of actuarial analysis. It is not clear why the author chooses to include such a topic in an introductory book. Furthermore, the emphasis of the book is on parametric models (accelerated failure time models) such as exponential or Weibull with three chapters (5,6 and 8). In practice, most people use KM or Cox PH models. This may be the author's strength, but it seems to be the wrong focus for a practical guide. I would prefer the author to spend more time on Cox PH model. However, the book is well written and contains useful information.

Worth a read

Until I read this book I did not realize the degree of conflict between the settler-descended population and the Aborigines. This seems to be a legacy that Australia is still struggling with, and the author takes a rather more critical and less patriotic view of the situation than most Australian historians. The problem of identity and what the country stands for now that it is no longer a part of the British Empire seems to be a lingering issue as well, but here the author strikes a more optimistic note, arguing that Australia can rightfully take its place in the world as a preserver and promoter of liberal democracy. This book was interesting in ways that I did not expect; I expected to read stories of the Outback and the exploits of barely reformed derelicts; instead I found my attention drawn to issues that are common to all developed democratic countries. Definitely worth a read.

Very good modernist view of Australian history

Stuart's work is an excellent overview of Australian history from the dreamtime to the present. He captures the major periods and events that shaped the progress of Australia towards federation and beyond, into the current malaise over national identity and the development of a unique and identifiable cultures.
Modern thought increasingly accepts the indigenous problems that were part of Australian colonisation, and Stuart probes these and other contemporary issues by drawing from both sides of the debate. He illustrates research that examines the language of overland explorers, to determine whether they were 'exploring' or 'conquering', and he comments on modern interpretations of the constitution by the high court. Readers not well versed in Australian issues may pass over these slights of hands without understanding their importance in the nature of forging an Australian history, culture and identity.
I would recommend this book as a necessary overview for any person interested in the history of the country, including potential tourists.

Informative and well-written

I have long wanted to read a general history of Austrailia, and when I read. on April 3, 1988, The Fatal Shore, by Robert Hughes, I said to myself, in my post-reading note: "I am glad I read this book, but maybe I'd've done better to read a plain history of Australia than this long account of this aspect of its beginning." I am shamed to say that it has taken over 12 years to do what I thought I should have done back then. This book goes up to 1999, and portrays very well the current dilemmas facing Australia. If you enjoy the articles in Current History, as I do, this book reminds me of those articles, except it is less bland and neutral. Ordinarily I avoid histories with designations such as "short" or "concise" figuring that I want a fuller treatment. But when one knows as little of a country as I do of Australia, I thought this a good introduction to its history.

About the Author
David A. Freedman is Professor of Statistics at the University of California, Berkeley. He has also taught in Athens, Caracas, Jerusalem, Kuwait, London, Mexico City, and Stanford. He has written several previous books, including a widely used elementary text. He is one of the leading researchers in probability and statistics, with 200 papers in the professional literature. He is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. In 2003, he received the John J. Carty Award for the Advancement of Science from the National Academy of Sciences, recognizing his 'profound contributions to the theory and practice of statistics'. Freedman has consulted for the Carnegie Commission, the City of San Francisco, and the Federal Reserve, as well as several departments of the US government. Very well-written...very rigorous. Fairly conventional.

This book is a very well-written, but ultimately fairly conventional textbook on linear models in statistics. It offers a very clear elementary introduction to the mathematics of the material, with an emphasis on both applications and rigor. It is to-the-point and does not cover very much material, instead choosing to cover material thoroughly and demonstrate the application of the material in practical situations.

I have heard this book described as "skeptical". It is not unduly skeptical; the author is just being the way every statistician ought to be. Any statistician who is not "skeptical" in this sense is accepting sloppy work.

The writing style in this book is very clear. Freedman is an outstanding writer! The book makes use of a decent amount of linear algebra and other mathematical notation that can be difficult for people to get through, but Freedman provides a very gentle introduction to the notation both through the text and through exercises (broken into small pieces, with a smooth gradient of difficulty). If you take your time and work through the book, you will not find it difficult to read.

Still, this book is not the be-all and end-all of texts on statistical models. It is particularly lacking on philosophical depth when it comes to the mathematical theory. This book describes techniques that are common practice and teaches you how to use them properly and evaluate them critically. It does not probe very deeply into how or why these techniques were developed. It does not encourage the reader to question the techniques themselves or to create new techniques or new theory. In my opinion, this is a shortcoming worth mentioning.

Also, there are a wide variety of topics that this book seems to ignore. By ignore, I not only mean that it does not cover them but that it is written almost as if these subjects do not exist. These subjects include, among others, causal inference, Bayesian statistics, and decision theory. For example, the book accepts squared error loss as a given, and other options, such as mean absolute error loss leading to quantile regression, are not even mentioned. I think the author should at least acknowledge these other perspectives and branches of statistics, briefly discuss how they relate to the material covered in the book, and point the reader to other texts to cover such material.

Is this a good book? I see it on many peoples' shelves. Personally, I found it immensely useful for learning linear regression properly. It is outstanding for self-study and would make a good textbook as well. But it does not stand on its own, even if all one wants to learn is regression. For what it is, this book is simply amazing; know its limitations, however, before buying it.

The Best Statistics Book I've Seen

I spent my life focusing on the errors of statistics and how they sometimes fail us in real life, because of the misinterpretation of what the techniques can do for you. This book is outstanding in the following two aspects: 1) It is of immense clarity, embedding everything in real situations, 2) It uses the real-life situation to critique the statistical model and show you the limit of statistic. For instance, he shows a few anecdotes here and there to illustrate how correlation between two variables might not mean anything causal, or how asymptotic properties may not be relevant in real life.

This is the first statistics book I've seen that cares about presenting statistics as a tool to GET TO THE TRUTH.

Please buy it.

NOW i get it

The formal reviews say this book is very well written. That is an understatement. Freedman uses plain English and interesting examples to explain the concepts behind the statistical jargon. This book is certainly good for those who will go on to advanced statistics and those who can read mathematical notation more easily than words. For those of us who need to apply the results of statistical studies but who do not wish to gain graduate degrees in statistics, Freedman gives us the background to understand studies we have to use, an understanding of whether regression is an appropriate model for specific situations, and the tools to ensure we are making appropriate comparisons. This book IS well written because it leads to understanding concepts rather than mechanical memorization.

But I use it as an occasional source of extra material. My life woiuld be a bit easier if activities that require listening (i.e., in my case at least, all students doing ti together) and reading/writing (i.e. can be an individual activity) were not on the same page.

Humane and Insightful Essays on Classical Islamic Thought on Theology, Law and Ethics

As the subtitle suggests, this book is a collection of essays that constitute reflections on aspects of the law, theology and ethics of Islam as shown primarily in writings from Islam's classical period, defined by author Mona Siddiqui roughly as the years from circa 1000 to circa 1500-1600. Siddiqui herself is Professor of Islamic and Interreligious Studies at the Divinity School of the University of Edinburgh.

Subjects considered include divorce in Islamic law (which required classical scholars to consider what intent was needed for effectual divorce, how this intent must be manifested in words and guidelines for the resolution of the effect of "problematic" utterances in circumstances where the existence of the necessary intent to divorce is unclear), the status of slaves, the proper practice of ritual slaughter of animals sacrificed to God, the Islamic attitude toward drunkenness, including what constitutes drunkenness and the effects of drunkenness on a believer's fitness for the performance of effective religious duties, Islam and the problem of evil (with insights from other traditions also), the meanings of the language of love as expressed in the Qur'an, and virtue and limits in the ethics of friendship in the Islamic scholarly tradition.

I was repeatedly struck by each of these essays with the diligent efforts of the classical scholars to interpret the materials before them so as to give a fair and accurate reading of God's will in the matters. Equally obvious, however, was each scholar's efforts not to set the bar so high as to be out of the reach of ordinary believers. The "rules" of Islamic life, as discussed in this book, do not require heroic measures from the faithful in order to meet the mark.

Again and again the mercy and forgiveness of Allah is stressed and the benefit of the doubt is frequently exercised in favor of the hapless potential sinner. This is especially true with behaviors (relatively small in themselves, such as minor drunkenness) that could leave a believer impure and thus unfit to pray in answer to the five daily calls. The prayer rituals are central to Islamic daily life and provide the faithful with frequent opportunities for repeated communication with Allah, and the scholars are obviously--and rightly-- reluctant to erect any impediment to that.

Prof. Siddiqui is an extraordinarily gifted, graceful and insightful writer whose essays are a delight to read. She is also clearly a master not only of the Islamic materials that she discusses but also of relevant thought from a number of other traditions as well as from her own reflections. The whole of the collection is informed throughout by her deep humanity and gentle spirit.

Today many in the West have difficulty in appreciating the humanity of Islam and find it easy to demonize all Islamics. Anyone who reads this book will have that difficulty much alleviated and perhaps utterly obliterated. Very well done, indeed, Prof. Siddiqui.

Very interesting

Professor Siddiqui has written an excellent book that explains some common questions about the Islamic faith from a strict Moslem perspective.

Having had a chance to live for years in Islamic states, I appreciated the candor of the Professor's analysis.

She does not candy coat her explanations, and in many of the explanations Professor Siddiqui does come down to a single, important element, faith.

Somewhere in the Age of Reason, the Industrial Revolution, and the Information Age, faith has been given a discounted value.

Then, large swaths of the world are confronted by actions take on faith and cannot understand the motivation.

Professor Siddiqui's, "the Good Muslim," serves as an excellent set of footnotes for world events.

Whether you are a faithful Moslem who is interested in some non-obvious aspects of Islamic faith and culture or someone of another walk who is just interested in Islamic faith and motivation, this book is for you!

Dear Christian, Please read this book

But...but I am a Christian...how could I enjoy this book this much? Mona Siddiqui is the Professor of Islamic and Interreligious Studies in the School of Divinity at The University of Edinburgh. She is a Muslim. She is a good Muslim. And this is a good book.

Contrary to popular opinion, the whole of Islam is summed up neither in the media's nor the Islamic fundamentalist's representation of sharia law. Siddiqui's goal is not to rehabilitate Islam, nor to elevate Islam over either Judaism or Christianity; her goal is to showcase the ofter overlooked (by Western eyes) beauty of Islamic thought, something very few non-Muslims recognize. No, we cannot call it Islamic theology, because as she notes, the Christian view of theology is wholly different than the Islamic view. Her goal, then, is to call attention to the intelligenstia of Islam's greatest teachers, to give a hidden view of what she finds in her faith.

While the book is not divided into sections, the chapters fall somewhat naturally into a bifurcated rythme. The first portion clearly deals with issues of Law while the second deals with Qur'anic views on life, love, and happiness. On the subject of Qur'anic law, the Western reader (albeit Christian or Jewish), will find that the broadcasted views of sharia law are more often than not equal to that of Christian zealots, i.e., gross misinterpretations. In this section, Siddiqui covers divorce, slavery, and purity laws (eating swine). Many of the views -- these are views expressed over the centuries by medieval and modern Islamic intellectuals -- will surprise Christians who tend to view Islam in much the same way they would view an archaic version of Paul's Judaism. The second section, beginning with chapter 5, is perhaps the most important to even the casual reader. In three chapters, the author discusses evil, love, and ethics from the Islamic perspective, but in comparison with Christian and Jewish ideas as well. Her language is carefully crafted to show respect to all three religions, although she has no concern with elevating Islam but does so without diminishing either Christian or Judaism (the same will never be said about many Christian theologians, unfortunately). The author shows a remarkable grasp of Christian theology and is able to use this to bring in her expected Christian audience. The Islam we know from the fickle observations on our part is the not the Islam presented here. She mirrors many Christians, in that way -- in defending her Islam, in defending our Christianity, against the over-amplified voice of the radical fundamentalists.

Mona Siddiqui has written an outstanding book meant to engage people of all faiths and has done so with an easy-to-digest writing style that is both academic and warm. The Good Muslim is a needed read, especially but those who think the only Muslims -- the only definition of Islam -- are those we see plastered across the twenty-four hour news networks.

About the Author
Andy Wood is Professor of Social History at the University of Durham. He writes about the poorer and middling people of Tudor, Stuart and Georgian England, and has published on a wide range of issues, including popular politics, class relations, rebellion, the mid-Tudor crisis, the English Revolution, local communities, literacy, oral culture, memory and customary law. His last book was The 1549 Rebellions and the Making of Early Modern England (Cambridge, 2007), which the American Historical Review described as 'social history at its best ... passionate and committed while at the same time judicious and balanced ... an extraordinary book, imaginative in its conceptualization and wide ranging in its implications'. Professor Wood is also the author of The Politics of Social Conflict: The Peak Country, 1520-1770 (Cambridge, 1999) and Riot, Rebellion and Popular Politics in Early Modern England (2002). He has held Research Fellowships with the British Academy, the Leverhulme Trust and the Institute of Advanced Studies at Durham University. About the Author
Michael Curtis is a Distinguished Professor Emeritus of political science at Rutgers University. He is the author of approximately 30 books, most notably Verdict on Vichy (2004), Three Against the Third Republic (1959),Totalitarianism (1979), and Antisemitism in the Contemporary World (1973). For many years, he was the president of American Professors for Peace in the Middle East and editor of the Middle East Review.

I don't generally write such negative reviews, and especially not on books that have ventured into areas that are of a deep interest of mine. I have to say though that this book contains very little that is original or scholarly, and merely repeats what its subjects have said, right down to their very prose. Rather than proceed further with critique, I present the following passages, one taken from page 142 of this book, the others taken from pages 142-144 of James Mill's History of British India, so that you can make up your own mind.

code in CD is not well written with a massive class for the

The book is not much more useful than previous editions for Fortran and C in 1986 edition. The C++ code is written under a common class defination "nr.h" for the whole book, which is a very bad idea. The "nr.h" is massive, hard to examine any attributes, hard to be portable and visualize the code for each method. It is very bad idea!! It appears that the authors are trying to tie-up user to buy book and CD all together. The authors did not think for people to use it conveniently. It is not worth to buy the book and the CD. The code is not useful and you have to re-write them.
If the Authors write the C++ code in such a manner that each method is self-contained, portable, easy to understand and use, it would be a different book and useful.

Non-practical issue

All the routhines are rewritten for c++ and 0-index array sounds good to me. They replaced array with their own vector and matrix class and they also gave the solutions if you don't like their classes. You can read the first chaper of the book more about the class they used on their website.
But be careful, if you use STL vector, you have to copy the data to NR vector, then call the routines. In other words, they are not compatible with each other. Either you hack into their source
or you have to use at least two vector classes at the same time.
I call the way they did neither Fortran style nor C++ style. Really deprice the value of the content.

Disappointed

I returned this book. The licensing is very restrictive. The book comes with an "Immediate License" that allows you to type the routines into your computer and use for personal and noncommercial purposes. Any other use or distribution requires the purchase of an additional license.

Some of the routines (Quicksort, p 336) are not very well coded: a bunch of one letter variable names, loops that only exit on break.
