About the Author
Malcolm N. Shaw, QC is the Sir Robert Jennings Professor of International Law at the University of Leicester. One of the world's leading international lawyers, he has been awarded the decoration of 'Officier de l'Ordre de la Valeur' by the Republic of Cameroon. He is a member of the Advisory Council of the British Institute of International and Comparative Law and a founding member of Curatorium, Xiamen Academy of International Law. heavy, but good

This is a dense but ultimately rewarding introduction to the subject matter. Shaw's prose is at best elliptical; it's very easy to lose the forest for the trees in this book, particular given Shaw's tendency to explain in exhaustive detail the procedural workings of the various international and regional organizations. Although it sometimes reads like a very, very long grocery list, it is an essential reference book for anyone hoping to learn about public international law. Overall, it's a very thorough introduction to the subject matter, and is much more accessible the second and third times through. Complemented by an excellent index and supplementary materials.

the jay treaty was signed in 1794...it is easy to see how a mistake may be overlooked and the date of 1974 may creep into the text of such a voluminous work. In the light hereof I think the reader from Korea was unnecessarily harsh...editing mistakes are an everyday occurrence and the date was as easy as a search in yahoo to verify.

The complexity of international law does not arise solely from the content of its statues but also from the legitimacy of its enforcement. The laws of cities, states, and nations are typically accompanied by a monopoly on how to enforce these laws. Their citizens have agreed to conform to these laws and their legitimacy as cities, states, and nations arises from this agreement. If citizens choose to violate these laws they are punished accordingly. But what entity oversees the punishment when laws between nations are violated? Such laws come under the umbrella of international law, the subject of this book, and their enforcement is only possible if the nations agree to this enforcement.

The question of enforcement usually arises in the context of the legitimacy of the use of force or acts of war between nations, and is dealt with in some detail in this book. But there are many other aspects of international law that are discussed, and some readers may want to deal with the sheer size of the book by selecting those areas they are most interested in. A study of international law has become essential in today's world, due in part to the many wars that have broken out, some of them definitely bearing the mark of aggression and "war crimes", but also because of trade and patent disputes, along with the availability of complex financial products that need to operate across borders.

The book is heavily referenced, satisfying those skeptical readers who need to delve into even more of the details. The author presents international law as a `separate system' of law, as one that is not merely an adjunct to the laws of two or more countries. There is no legislature, no system of courts, and no institution to establish legal rules. Thus enforcement becomes an issue, at least if one insists on comparing international law with domestic law, and thus the author raises the question early on as to the status of international law as actually being a legitimate subfield of legal thought. It seems that the concept of coercion and its use is essential for qualify a system of statements as being a legal system. The author addresses these issues early on in the book, and as expected he concludes that one cannot ascertain the character or nature of international law solely with respect to a definition of law based on sanctions. His goal then is to find out why states feel compelled to follow the statutes of international law. If they do not, then he believes no system of international law can exist. It follows immediately that compliance among nations is a necessary condition for international law. As a system of legal thought, international law governs `patterns of conduct' that nations are to comply with. A search for "stability" and "predictability" compels different nations to respect the system of international law. `Reciprocity' and risk aversion may dissuade states from violating these agreements, since there is no international police force to punish violations.

The author also traces the history of international law, which as a legal body of thought primarily has its roots in the last four centuries, but whose underpinnings can be trace backed for thousands of years. Very interesting in his treatment of this history is the origin of `natural law' which he traces back to the ancient Greeks and taken up (oddly enough) by the Romans. The doctrine of natural law has a few noted adherents of late, including a few who sit on the United States Supreme Court. But as can easily be ascertained by perusing the author's history, international law is well represented geographically and culturally, a fact that is sometimes forgotten in Western culture. This "Eurocentric" view however has been weakened for the last several decades according to the author. Philosophical speculations, theology, and political science of course have played a role in the content of international law, and in this regard the author discuss the impact of positivism. Marxist-Leninist doctrine of course played a huge role especially in the late nineteenth century and all through the twentieth century. Modern developments in the legal theory of international law have been very influenced, as has every other realm of human activity, by mathematics, particularly in the use of game theory and decision theory. The author discusses this briefly, along with "feminist" approaches to legal reasoning.

But if international law has not formal body of courts or presiding legislature, how is one to judge objectively cases or grievances that interested parties classify as being under the umbrella of international law? One needs test cases, precedents, documentation, or "sources" as the author calls them to give some sort of degree of certainty to the legal process. He devotes an entire chapter to this topic, and states early on that he believes international law does exist and has sources from which one can extract rules and perform useful analysis. What might be called "grassroot" behaviors and rules or "customs" which at first glance may be dismissed as irrelevant play a very important and dynamic role in international law the author argues, and he gives extensive discussion on why he thinks this is the case. And interestingly, he characterizes treaties as being a modernized version of creating law through custom. Of course the United Nations and other institutions have acted as sources, provoking sometimes much skepticism as to their efficacy in this regard.

If countries or states had laws on their books that directly conflict with international law or are at odds with it to some noticeable degree then a resolution or compromise must be found. Thus the `municipal laws' of a state must be related to the legal frameworks of international law, and the author devotes an entire chapter of the book to this topic. He outlines briefly the different schools of thought on this relationship, before he decides on a "realist" approach to this issue, and he clearly supports the notion that international law cannot be evaded by a state by applying its internal legal rules. He then discusses historical evidence that shed light on the complexity of this assertion, including real court cases from Great Britain and the United States.

About the Author
Michael E. Hyland is Professor of Health Psychology at the University of Plymouth. For the first 15 years of his career he worked as a theoretical psychologist and helped set up the International Society for Theoretical Psychology. He went on to develop an interest in health psychology, specialising in respiratory disease. He is the author of several quality of life questionnaires and has published over 100 articles in psychology and medical journals.

Inaccurate

The author has unfortunately uncritically repeated many falsehoods about ME ("CFS") found in the literature by a small group of charlatans who seek to cast ME as a psychogenic disorder.

I refer the authors to the 2011 ME International Consensus Criteria for accurate information on ME

I apologize to anyone who feels this review and negative-rating is overly focused on one disease. Giving it one-star could be misleading to people who don't have time to read this review, who assume that I think the whole book is terrible. This is a definite negative to my giving it one-star. However, all of the inaccurate info on ME causes a huge amount of iatrogenic morbidity and even some mortality. It is so important that this be addressed that I believe this benefit outweighs the detriment I mentioned. I understand if you feel differently.

I would love to give the book a five-star rating and will very gladly do so if an accurate entry on ME is substituted. I do think it is otherwise a very good work. Pls take info from the ME ICC, supra, and/or contact me for more info and free help. Thank you.

There are some accurate statements in the piece on ME, but many harmful inaccuracies taken from studies or articles by proven frauds such as Simon Wessely and which use the Reeves and Sharpe definitions of "CFS" which are both patently invalid on their face.

Here are a sample of the egregious inaccuracies in this article:
"Like CFS and IBS, patients with medically unexplained symptoms have no specific pathophysiology associated with their symptoms." p.15
"The muscles of the CFS patient are not actually weak, they just appear to the patient to be weak." p.174
"No biochemical has been found to help or treat CFS" p.174

About the Author
Professor Sir Patrick Bateson FRS is Emeritus Professor of Ethology at the University of Cambridge. He is President of the Zoological Society of London and former Biological Secretary and Vice-President of the Royal Society. He has a long-standing interest in behavioural development and in evolutionary theory.

Professor Sir Peter Gluckman FRS is arguably New Zealand's most recognised biomedical scientist. A University of Auckland Distinguished Professor, he is Professor of Paediatric and Perinatal Biology and former Director of the Liggins Institute for Medical Research. The bulk of his recent research has related to developmental plasticity and its relationship to human health.

The Expanding World of Epigenetics Elegantly Explained

I have read this volume several times with much pleasure. The authors bring together a vast array of literature in both the biological and behavioral disciplines that in a convincing way demonstrates the often subtle yet critical interweaving of genetic and experiential foundations of phenotypic reality in a cogent and creative manner. It provides and excellent guide to the literature on epigenetics, a field that is revolutionizing the life sciences in profound ways.

One thing I appreciated particularly was the authors' categorization of plasticity, robustness, development and evolution as indicated by the title of this valuable book. What this shows is how these various themes are intertwined in often fundamental and surprising ways. They also bring in issues of creativity, where the organism can move beyond previous constraints in finding new opportunities, many of which are critical to successful adaptations to the environment.

The authors' writing style is clear and concise. Points are made that highlight particular issues that appear resolved and those that demand further attention.

For anyone wanting to get beyond the unproductive thinking that has too long been a blind alley in the nature "versus" nurture debate this volume is a jewel. Throughout it is not nature versus nurture but nature with nurture as these processes operate throughout the living world.

FLEXIBLE

I love this series for its flexibility. I can add activities, expand on the images in the books, etc. as needed to suit my learners. The teacher's book simply highlights that. The person who rated it negatively seems to think of the teacher book as a directive. It's more of a guide, with good ideas. I do not follow the teacher's book much at all, I use it for ideas but prefer to dig into my own toolkit of ideas. The text book and student work book themselves provide you with a LOT even if you don't have the teacher book.

I have been teaching adult learners from the first level for about a semester. Students enjoy it and it is at a perfect level for them. I substitute taught for an intermediate high class yesterday. The teacher reported that she occasionally used the Venture series (level 4) and asked me to teach from the fourth lesson in that. The students LOVED it. They asked where they could buy it for themselves, and were delighted when I pointed them to the free online arcade that goes with the lessons.

If you teach a multilevel classroom, especially of adult learners (who might prefer a text in addition to using theme-based activities), this is a great resource.

I rate it as four of five because I wish the authors had done more with the written components of each unit, they have a written piece, but it's usually (at least at the basic level) not very engaging. I supplement with True Stories in the News or other such books.

I love the book. Real language, lots of interactive/listening/grammar exercises, CASAS oriented. I highly recommend it for ESL teachers/students.

Hate this book

I absolutely hate this series. Using it is more work than it is worth. The teacher's manual is extremely thick with all of the work it expects the teacher to do. If you want to spend all of your (unpaid personal) time doing nothing but prepping for your class, then this series is fabulous. But if you want to have any kind of a life at all, avoid Ventures. How does Ventures meet all the Casas requirements?...By being able to say that in the teacher's manual it told the teacher to do this and do that.

Plus, most of the best worksheets/activities in Ventures that don't require a lot of work by the teacher are not reproducible so you must have a consumable copy of the book for each student.

Ventures is worthless if you are teaching absolute beginners, especially if they are poorly educated in their own countries. In other words, Ventures is worthless for teaching your average illegal immigrant from Mexico or Central America who doesn't know 10 words of English.

This series looks okay for upper beginning or higher level students and beginning students who are well educated in their countries of origin. But if you have to teach beginning students who don't have high school diplomas in their own countries, then this will be the curriculum from hell.

There is one manual that has some reproducible pages in it but you definitely cannot support an entire class with these materials. You will still have to make most of your own unless your employer is providing you with a consumable manual for each student. And even then, poorly educated beginners will not be able to use it.

Amending review: Someone in a comment asked that I describe why I felt this series was not good for absolute beginners so here goes.

Point one: This book does not teach reading. It barely skims the alphabet before moving on to complicated tasks like filling out job applications and other difficult tasks. Absolute adult beginners from Mexico (especially the illegal immigrant population) tend to have only a first to third grade education in Mexico. In other words, they are barely literate or nearly illiterate in their own language. Thus they don't even know their own alphabet very well. In addition, they do not understand how to complete worksheets or do things on paper that most of us would consider common knowledge. This series does not take this type of learner into account. The majority of my learners had no idea what to do as far as filling out a worksheet as they had literally never in their lives done it. This book required the students to complete many book and worksheet tasks that were not within their frame of reference. Therefore, I had to compensate for that by creating my own materials and lessons that ignored the book.

Point two: The book does not place enough emphasis on vocabulary. My learners knew almost no English words. They didn't even know the most basic English words. Vocabulary is the absolute first thing that my learners needed to begin learning. I went out and bought many flashcards with pictures so that the students could visually see different vocabulary ideas. This book mostly wanted the teacher to rely on pointing at objects in the room. That only worked for objects actually in the room.

Point three: Illiterate native English children usually need a comprehensive program to learn to read. Often this would incorporate phonics type teaching. Illiterate beginners who are adults also need this. This book provides nothing like this.

Point four: Many people teaching English to adults will be doing so as part of some program that is tied to CASAS or some other official program. Program funding is often dependent on the students performing at a certain level at end of term on CASAS or other official tests. This book claims to follow CASAS and any number of other programs. However, it doesn't do it well. Because it is claiming to match so many different curriculums, it follows none of them in a dedicated way. Therefore, the teacher must do a lot of modification to make the book work for their particular requirements. It would be like buying a refrigerator that claims it is simultaneously an oven, microwave, dishwasher, and dehydrator. Do you really believe one appliance can do all of those things well. It reminds me of the math textbooks that are put out that have to meet the requirements of every state's education department. To do that, the textbooks end up being 500 page, 10 pound horrors of convoluted and inefficient instruction. As an example of the type of work the book wanted me to do, it wanted me to find authentic applications for the students to practice filling out. I did. However, I should not have had to do that. Maybe it doesn't seem a big deal to drop by a store or library to grab a stack of applications for my students or to look on the internet for applications for them to fill out, but when you are constantly doing things like this as well as having to modify or create lessons because of the book's deficiencies, it becomes more than an annoyance. By the way, it is really fun trying to follow the book that has illiterate students filling out complicated applications for employment and such. That was sarcasm. Actually, it made me want to beat my head into a wall.

Point five: In the old days, an instructor could mainly just follow a textbook and plan a few of their own basic projects or instructions for the students. However, nowadays, the textbooks all come with complicated teacher reference manuals that come with a ridiculous number of ideas for the teacher that involve the teacher having to create a lot of materials and basically do cartwheels to comply. This is one of those books that does that. The book came with videos for the teachers to watch. We were made to sit through hours of these boring videos showing some "master instructor" using the book in some prescribed manner. That instructor had pretty advanced students though. Not only would what he was doing not work with my level of students, but additionally, any book that can't be used by a teacher without them watching hours of instructional videos showing them how to teach with it has something wrong with it.

Where was this book when they were tryng to teach me grammar?

I never thought that there was any simple way to understand English grammar. I found math and science easier to understand because there was a logical foundation and once the principles were learned one could build on them. This book provides such a logical basis for understanding English grammar.

Masterful synthesis of Inquisition research

This is a dense work that uses innumerable original documents and earier research
to provide a detailed picture of the Inquisition's origins, organization, and functioning, and
its leaders, collaborators, victims, and opponents, in Portugal and Spain and their empires
well as in Italy. Bethancourt delineates differences in these Inquisitions over time and the
political and economic nexus in which they were embedded. This is not a book for casual
reading, but an invaluable resource on this institution which anticipated so much of modern
totalitarian surveillance and control.

The book came ahead of schedule and was in excellent condition. It presents the Inquisitions in a new light which I found intriguing. I plan on using is as an auxilliary text in a course I am planning.
