About the Author
Marianne Celce-Murcia (Ph.D. in Linguistics, 1972) is Professor Emerita of Applied Linguistics and TESL at the University of California, Los Angeles, where for 30 years she taught primarily graduate students, preparing to be language teachers and researchers. Beyond her work at UCLA, she taught in and administered English language programs in Nigeria (1964-1966), Egypt (Fall, 1980), Canada (Summer, 1983), and Armenia (2003-2007). She has lectured and led workshops all over the U.S. and in many other countries as well. In addition to her co-authorship (with Diane Larsen-Freeman) on the three editions of "The Grammar Book," she is co-editor (with Donna Brinton and Marguerite Ann Snow) of the fourth edition of "Teaching English as a Second or Foreign Language" (2014) and series co-editor (with Maggie Sokolik) of the five-volume, content-based "Grammar Connection" series (2008-2009), all with Cengage Learning, who (as Heinle & Heinle) presented her with their lifetime achievement award in 1997. At UCLA Marianne was honored for distinguished teaching both as a graduate student (1964) and as a professor (1976).

Brinton is employed by University of California, Los Angeles.

professor's perspective

I'm teaching a course using this as the text, and here's my professor's perspective. This book has a number of major advantages, in particular the clarity of the exposition and huge number of activities. There are also a number of downsides, most of which would be simple to fix. I don't understand how the reviewers didn't point them out. If I ever decide to do a review for a journal, I'll explain in detail exactly where the problems lie in detail, but here's short version; It is clear that the authors are not phonologists or phoneticians, and they make a few errors. One example: /ɑ/ is not a central vowel but a back one, same really for [ʌ], which is why Enɡlish learners often confuse them. Why the authors do not use IPA but feel the somewhat archaic need to come up with a modified system is beyond me. Wikitionary uses IPA, other courses (e.g., intro to linguistics) may very well use IPA. Why confuse students with different systems? IPA allows cross-linguistic comparisons. [r] for example is "rolled" (tecnhically trilled) rhotic, not the US approximant [ɹ]. Finally, phonology is not clearly separated from the consonant chapter, which is really quite long 60+ pages! I should have divided it into two for my course, and I will next time.

Pronunciation, but a little lacking

This text was used in a phonetics class. It is clear and able to provide even a CD with appropriate sounds, however, I thought it would have been better for the authors to use International Phonetic Alphabet rather than the American only version. Also due to this there are slight differences in some of the alphabet characters, and it would have been best to teach student's using a more universal method.

However, the book overall is simplistic and easy to read, though dense in some areas with lots of examples. I think it provides as it says a great "reference guide" to ESL teachers for classroom activities to teach the sounds of North American English to students.

Great resource book

This is great resource. I highly recommend it. It's detailed but readable. I'm working on a MA in TESOL and of all the texts we've been assigned, this is the most easily digestible. It's well organized and focused but written with language and pace that won't make your brain feel like it will explode. Those of you who are grad students know what I mean...after a certain amount of info you just want to quit and go a lay down on concrete because that may be more comfortable.

Charles Tilly is currently Joseph L. Buttenwieser Professor of Social Science, Columbia University. Tilly has authored, co-authored, edited, or co-edited 50 published books and monographs. He has also published between 600 and 700 scholarly articles, reviews, review-essays, comments, chapters in edited collections, and prefaces not counting reprints, translations, and working papers. His most recently published books are Contention and Democracy in Europe, 1650-2000 (2004), Social Movements, 1768-2004 (2004), Economic and Political Contention in Comparative Perspective (co-authored and co-edited with Maria Kousis, 2005), Trust and Rule (2005), Why? (2006), Oxford Handbook of Contextual Political Analysis (co-authored and co-edited with Robert Goodin, 2006), Contentious Politics (co-authored with Sidney Tarrow, 2006), and Democracy (2007). He is a member of the National Academy of Sciences, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the American Philosophical Society, and the Ordre des Palmes Académiques. He has received numerous international prizes and honorary degrees.

About the Author
Ira Katznelson is Ruggles Professor of Political Science and History, Columbia University. His most recent books are When Affirmative Action Was White (2005) and Desolation and Enlightenment: Political Knowledge After Total War, Totalitarianism, and the Holocaust (2003), which received the David and Helene Spitz Prize and the David Easton Award.

Andreas Kalyvas is Assistant Professor in the Department of Politics at The New School for Social Research and the Eugene Lang College for Liberal Arts. He is the recipient of the 2002 Leo Strauss Award for the best doctoral dissertation in the field of political philosophy and the author of Democracy and the Politics of the Extraordinary: Max Weber, Carl Schmitt, Hannah Arendt (2008).

Beware of the material, there may be legal implications in using it.

There are a number of cases that are misrepresented in this material.
For some cases there was successful legal action taken and these adverse judgements are is presented as "errors".
The Judgements stand, and I have been led to believe that new litigation has commenced as a result of the defamatory content within.

Therefore, I would be very circumspect trusting the material in this book until the matter is cleared.
Malfeasance and defamation should not be whitewashed as "misdeeds and mishaps".
I read (and still have) a physical copy of this book, lent to me by an acquaintance.

For legal reasons, Amazon should consider withdrawing the publication and dissemination of this material.

About the Author
MacGregor Knox has served as Stevenson Professor of International History at the London School of Economics and Political Science since 1994. He was educated at Harvard College (BA, 1967) and Yale University (PhD in History, 1977), and has also taught at the University of Rochester (USA). His writings deal with the wars and dictatorships of the savage first half of the twentieth century and with contemporary international and strategic history, and include Mussolini Unleashed, 1939-1941 (1982); The Making of Strategy: Rulers, States, and War (ed., with Williamson Murray and Alvin Bernstein) (1994); Hitler's Italian Allies: Royal Armed Forces, Fascist Regime, and the War of 1940-43 (2000); The Dynamics of Military Revolution, 1300-2050 (ed., with Williamson Murray) (2001); and To the Threshold of Power: Origins and Dynamics of the Fascist and National Socialist Dictatorships (2007). Between his undergraduate and graduate studies he spent three years in the U.S. Army, and served in the Republic of Vietnam (1969) as rifle platoon leader with the 173rd Airborne Brigade.

Good start to the Nazi and Fascist Regimes

Common Destiny provides an excellent overview of the Fascist and Nazi regimes that existed during the World War II era. Macgregor Knox sets out to provide the reader a comparison between the two in how they came to power, maintained power and dissolved. The first two chapters take an even wider view and asses the various factors that led to unification and how those factors allowed Hitler and Mussolini to take power. While the book is somewhat dated particularly with regards to recent scholarship on Italy it provides an excellent starting point for anyone wishing to compare these regimes. It serves as an excellent overview on how these regimes conducted military and foreign policy as well as the prospects for each. The book is well written and perfect for a starting look at these regimes.

Steven P. Lee is Donald R. Harter Professor in Humanities at Hobart and William Smith Colleges in Geneva, New York. He is the author of Morality, Prudence, and Nuclear Weapons (Cambridge University Press, 1993) and What Is the Argument? Critical Thinking in the Real World (2002), the editor of Intervention, Terrorism, and Torture: Contemporary Challenges to Just War Theory (2007) and the co-editor of Ethics and Weapons of Mass Destruction (Cambridge University Press, 2004).

Pretty good introduction to Just War Theory

Dr. Lee has written a pretty good introduction to Just War Theory in this well-organized and clearly written work. He combines a solid introduction to the theoretical aspects of the topic with plenty of real world examples. It is written at a level appropriate for the college student who wants to learn about the ethics of war, and it would make a fine introductory textbook for a class dealing with that issue. The greatest strength of this book is the outlined structure that Lee used, helping the reader organize the material in her own mind. It is also helpful for anyone wishing to jump to (or skip) certain sections. This would also be quite useful for an instructor who could tell students, "Today we're going to look at section 2.2, 'The origins of the just war tradition.'"

What I was less impressed by was Lee's own politics entering the conversation in subtle ways. For an introduction of this nature, it seemed inappropriate, and sometimes a bit dishonest. While students might not notice the ax he has to grind, he is nonetheless doing so. There were also places where I was disappointed in his analysis. For example, on p. 22, he announces that particularistic pacifism is not "a moral view at all" because it is not "universalistic." This completely ignores approaches to ethics with a long foundation in eastern religion/philosophy as well as Roman Catholicism.

Over all, if one is looking for a good introduction to just war theory, and can remember that Lee is not the final word on the subject, I could recommend this book. I certainly benefited from reading it.
