About the Author
Dr Lewis I. Held earned his BS in Life Sciences from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1973. On completion of his PhD in molecular biology from the University of California, Berkeley in 1977, he became a Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of California, Irvine's Developmental Biology Center from 1977 to 1980. Following a 6-year period as an Assistant Professional Research Biologist at the University of California, Irvine, he joined Texas Tech University as an Associate Professor of Biology in 1987. He was awarded the President's Excellence in Teaching Medal from Texas Tech University in 1995 and is the author of Models for Embryonic Periodicity and Imaginal Discs: The Genetic and Cellular Logic of Pattern Formation.

life's little quirks

Held does an excellent job of exploring and explaining some quirks of human anatomy. Through a series of interesting and provocative questions, he examines human development and evolution in an entertaining and didactic but rigorous way. Using the coined term "bislagiatt," an acronym for "but it seemed like a good idea at the time", and an array of fascinating diagrams with detailed explanations, the author sets out to show how the current discipline of evolutionary development, or evo-devo, can address some of the most fundamental aspects of human form, growth, and development. Questions such as why some parts of our anatomy are symmetric and others are not, why are arms different from legs, why men and women have different size and shapes, and why some of our structures seem ill-equipped for certain tasks, provide the basis for covering much of what is known about evolution, genetics, and development. "Quirks of Human Anatomy" would be quite useful as additional reading for any course on evolution or development. It also stands alone as a very worthwhile, very enjoyable scientific book.

Great intro to human evo-devo

This little book summarizes many strange aspects of human anatomy, including not only the musculo-skeletal system, organ structure and placement, and neurology, but the external soft tissue (e.g., hair). The chapters on the possibilities of evolution (why no flying elephants and 6-limbed vertebrates) and human sexual dimorphism are great. The only drawback is that the illustrations are hugely complicated, even with extensive captioning. They need to be studied a long time.

A fairly technical compendium, with references, of evolutionary left-overs in the human body. About half the book is the listing of references. Fun to read, however.

About the Author
John A. Lynn II earned his PhD from the University of California at Los Angeles. He is the author of Bayonets of the Republic: Tactics and Motivation in the Army of Revolutionary France, 1791-94 (1984); Giant of the Grand Siècle: The French Army, 1610-1715 (1997); The Wars of Louis XIV, 1667-1714 (1999); The French Wars 1667-1714: The Sun King at War (2002); and Battle: A History of Combat and Culture (2003 and 2004). He has edited The Tools of War: Ideas, Instruments, and Institutions of Warfare, 1445-1871 (1990) and Feeding Mars: Logistics in Western Warfare from the Middle Ages to the Present (1993). He has also published eighty chapters, articles, and papers. He has served as president of the United States Commission on Military History and as vice-president of the Society for Military History. In addition he has been awarded the Palmes Academiques at the rank of chevalier from the French government and the Wissam al Alaoui at the rank of commander from his Majesty, King Mohammed VI of Morocco.

Groundbreaking work, essential reading

Essential reading for any student of women's military roles in history. This groundbreaking book convincingly shows that early modern armies could not operate without women. Some actually fought, but most filled essential roles in supply and support. Exemplary in its critical use of sources, this book is outstanding for classroom use and general reading, as well as for researchers. Anyone researching or teaching European history should start here.

Lynn makes the point that there are many questions to be answered about the role of women in the armies of early modern Europe. Still getting us to think about the possible answers to these questions is an achievement, and in the places where he is able to provide plausible answers, he has made quite a contribution to women's and military history. An enjoyable read.

Ever since I read that women were the pack mules in Alexander the Greats army, carrying all the food and camp gear while their men only carried a sword, I've wondered about the role of women in armies.

Very little has been written about the history of women in armies because not much is known. Records such as memoirs or legal proceedings don't exist until modern times, when the number of women accompanying armies dropped precipitously. Women weren't paid either, so they don't show up in military budgets. And you can't trust fiction - the public always enjoyed reading about cross-dressing women who secretly enlisted as men, but there were very few women who actually did this.

Before 1650, armies were like huge cities moving across the landscape. When Charles the VIII of France invaded Italy in 1494, there were roughly 50,000 non-combatants who supported 20,000 soldiers. There were always larger numbers of camp followers than soldiers. In some armies, boys came along as servants, with as many as one per two soldiers.

In addition to women, support came from bakers, carpenters, blacksmiths, and all the other professions needed to provision an army. In order to survive, these huge moving armies preyed on the farms and towns they passed through, including their own people. They pillaged, raped, and took what food and provisions they needed. Also, tens of thousands of horses fed on the lands they crossed, and the land owners were rarely compensated.

Plunder was the "lottery" of its time, a way for the poor to escape miserable jobs and come home wealthy. Some men and women formed temporary plunder partnerships. Women helped in the plunder and helped carry the booty. They also cooked, and if the couple had a business, often kept the books and helped sell the product, plus did men's work, digging trenches and other hard labor. But men never did womens work - women had a hard life in the army.

Many couples weren't married, and single women earned so little doing laundry and other menial chores they often had to prostitute themselves to get by. And many of the most desperately poor women earned their livings as prostitutes in the army.

In the 15th century, Erasmus wrote a colloquy called "of a soldier's life". In this, he argues that "The wicked Life of Soldiers is shewn to be very miserable: That War is Confusion, and a Sink of all manner of Vices". In this colloquy, a solder is told "it is not love of country, but love of booty that made you a solder" and the solder replies "I confess so, and I believe very few go into the army with any better design".

Pillaging was a free-for-all, sometimes the soldier got to keep what he took, but often the booty was piled up and distributed based on agreements between officers and men.

But very few soldiers returned with plunder, because they spent the booty was spent on whoring, wine, gambling, food, and other necessities.

And plunder was a necessity at times, because although the armies from 1450 to 1650 were mainly mercenaries, hired as needed, but they often didn't get any pay (the deal makers kept it). So armies sometimes went on strike just before a battle, demanding pay. At times the lack of pay led to mutiny, but usually it resulted in the pillage of towns and farms.

Since the people armies preyed on were from the same lower social classes as the soldiers, they tried to see peasants as inferior. This contempt made it easier for them to prey on those so like themselves. The hatred was mutual - farmers and towns people favored art and literature where peasants wreaked revenge on marauding soldiers.

Quartering armies was so onerous that Louis the XIV of France tried to compel Protestants to convert to Catholicism by forcing them to quarter the infamously badly behaved Dragonnades.

Americans detested quartering British troops so much that the 3rd amendment of the U.S. Constitution forbids quartering in peacetime without the owners consent.

These small moving cities of soldiers and their supporting non-combatants flouted the morality of the settled farmers and townspeople. The soldiers wore uniforms that were a parody of upper class clothing and in violation of the sumptuary laws. Women wore flamboyant costumes that defied civilian morals. As author John Lynn puts it "these sons of peasants transformed themselves from sparrows into assertive peacocks". Many soldiers spent their pay and booty to finely adorn their prostitutes.

This all changed when state armies arose after 1650 and troops became more disciplined, got better pay, health care, and consisted of far less mercenaries. Eventually their mission was to protect civilians, and they became welcome rather than feared.

John Lynn also covers the status of women, the roles of wives, unmarried partners, and prostitutes, how women in armies appeared in cultural works of art and literature, the work they performed, biographies of the few women who did cross-dress as men, and much more.

Women must have fought in battles that turned against them, and townswomen must have fought to defend their homes and honor. But so little is known, and will always remain a mystery.

About the Author
Michele Bratcher Goodwin, B.A., J.D., LL.M., is the Everett Fraser Professor of Law at the University of Minnesota, where she holds joint appointments in the Medical School and the School of Public Health. In 2008, she was a Visiting Professor at the University of Chicago Law School. She has been a visiting scholar at Berkeley School of Law in the Center for the Study of Law and Society. She was a postdoctoral Fellow at Yale University, conducting research on the antebellum politics of sex and law. Her op-ed commentaries have appeared in the Los Angeles Times, Washington Post, Houston Chronicle, Christian Science Monitor, Chicago Sun Times and Forbes Magazine.

Baby Markets: A Critical Review

This book is a collection of 19 essays by 24 authors about how issues of market economics affect the worlds of adoption and assisted reproduction. The editor's first objective is to point out that market economics is present in these two worlds, whether we like it or not, and rather than either denying or celebrating the fact, we ought to work hard to maximize the benefits of the market in these worlds and minimize the harms. Her second objective is to discuss the issues of market economics for adoption and assisted reproduction side by side and to point out the common factors between these two worlds.

All in all, I found the book a very valuable read. Ms. Bratcher Goodwin succeeded in both of her objectives. Any reader dealing with the infant or child adoption enterprises will have an excellent appreciation of how his issues relate to those of assisted reproduction - and vice versa. The work was well referenced.

All that said, I have a number of (hopefully) constructive criticisms:

1) It is unclear whom the intended audience is. Most of the essays read at the college graduate level and could not easily be followed by anyone without specific professional training.

2) I was disappointed not to find an essay from my field - embryo adoption - given that embryo adoption is the one endeavor that clearly overlaps the fields of adoption and assisted reproduction.

3) Of the 24 essay contributors, 18 were attorneys by training. Better representation from other fields valuable to this conversation: bioethics, moral philosophy, medicine, business economics, and social work, would have been valuable.is tendency.

4) I was pleased that conservative family scholar Maggie Gallagher addressed the value of kinship in our society and pointed out that it is threatened by the changes that both market and government are forcing onto the institution of the family. That said, I thought Ms. Gallagher could have dispensed with some of the diplomatic language and hit a bit harder.

5) It was disappointing to see certain assumptions - the validity of homosexual parenting, the legitimacy of embryonic stem cell research, and the rejection of societal gender roles - affirmed without any discussion or debate.

6) Given that three essays dealt with ESC research, I was disappointed to find adult stem cell research - which has a far more robust track record in producing potentially curative therapies - not mentioned even once.

In summary, despite its shortcomings, the book is an informative and valuable resource. I recommend it for professionals working, lecturing, or writing in the adoption and assisted reproduction enterprises or related subjects.

Bioproperty marketization

Purchased this book for a law school class on Bioproperty. While certainly not for the casual reader, this book provides a strong collection of essays regarding the commodification of human reproduction. Does a decent job of providing pieces that cover both sides of a controversial issue. My only complaint is that the Kindle edition didn't provide page numbers, and lacked the metadata to provide "time left in chapter" estimates.

Clear explanations of plasma physics in the fusion context

I have found this book immensely useful and a pleasure to read as a senior undergraduate engaging in summer research in fusion. It is perfect for learning basic plasma physics in the context of fusion, which may not be easy with books that discuss plasma more generally (such as F.F. Chen's introductory book, though that is very good). The writing is highly structured and clear physical pictures are presented.

There is a nice opening section on energy options and where fusion fits in, and there are sections on fusion reactor types and technologies.

We are all teachers and learners

If you agree that we are increasingly called upon to influence learning and decision-making, on the fly, while winging it, you need to read this book. The first chapter, What Makes Good Teachers Great by Sawyer, is particularly insightful in examining how things work and how things need to work to get better outcomes. Each successive chapter is better than the last.
