This book is a major English-language introduction to the earliest manuscripts of the New Testament. An essential handbook for scholars and students, it provides a thorough grounding in the study and editing of the New Testament text combined with an emphasis on the dramatic current developments in the field. Covering ancient sources in Greek, Syriac, Latin and Coptic, it: • Describes the manuscripts and other ancient textual evidence, and the tools needed to study them • Deals with textual criticism and textual editing, describing modern approaches and techniques, with guidance on the use of editions • Introduces the witnesses and textual study of each of the main sections of the New Testament, discussing typical variants and their significance. A companion website with full-colour images provides generous amounts of illustrative material, bringing the subject alive for the reader.

Useful overview for postgraduates
By Helen Hancox
Although entitled 'an introduction' this book appears to be aimed more at the postgraduate Biblical Studies student. It includes an overview of different manuscripts, the various classification systems and how to use them, other witnesses, textual criticism, how to use critical editions and concludes with a brief summary of the various manuscript witnesses for Revelation, the Pauline corpus, Acts and the Catholic epistles and the Gospels.
The author's writing style is clear and scholarly with a vast repository of bibliographic notes which should provide the reader with most of the information they need to find more on a particular subject. The author requires the reader to read Greek, Latin and German to make the most of this book (most citations in those languages are untranslated) and there are particularly large sections of Greek in the final section.
This book served to highlight the importance and complexity of the textual critic's work, of the vast array of different manuscripts and the difficulties in classifying them, of the ways in which textual criticism can influence theology and exegesis and the many areas where further work is required, particularly with regard to postdoctoral research. This was an interesting and helpful book but not for the beginner in textual criticism.

just what I need
By peter12345
An 'introduction' (to a topic, or to a person), does not guarantee complete understanding, of every intimate detail.
So don't let a 4-star reviewer turn off an intelligent layman, who will benefit enormously even by understanding less than 100%.
This book has everything I need, in one place. So don't be afraid to jump in, skim, and maybe come back to it again. It's easy, enthusiastic, and useful.

Helpful note: Good text, but beware there is no image at all nor links work
By Oxford
This is one of only handful number of standard texts which are used for the course of papyrology and textual criticism of the New Testament Studies. Its popularity cannot be fairly weighed, because--as mentioned--only handful of books written for the general readership unless you can find an old classic such as Kenyon's Handbook to the Textual Criticism.
That said, it is still very good as an introduction to the discipline. Informative it is to cover wide and variety of area in well summarized fashion. For this reason I would recommend it to entry level students who want to be acquainted with the discipline. On the other hand, however, there was huge drawback for this book. Parker thought it would be better to put all images (almost everything) into an Oxford website instead of putting these in the book-size, clarity, cost, etc. reasons. Funny it is, that this website does not exist, or no longer holds these images at all. In fact he gives other urls for some other resources, and those seemed to be relocated as well. So be prepared to be surprised and frustrated if you expect to see any colorful images whenever the text indicates there is an image in numeric order. I am sure they once worked, but no longer they do.
Although text is good (pricy, it has to be good), because this is such a huge minus I can only give 2.5 stars.
