A nonmetaphysical Hegel

This outstanding tour de force reading presents Hegel as primarily an ethical and politcal thinker of modernity, rather than the legendarily over-ambitious and obscure metaphysician he is stereotyped to be. Pippin provocatively suggests that for Hegel, what we really believe is best understood in terms of what we actually do, rather than what we tell ourselves and others. Pippin's reading is close to those of Terry Pinkard and Robert Brandom (also highly recommended). Pippin goes beyond what these authors have published to date in explicitly tackling the difficult issue of what "freedom" really means for Hegel. On this question Hegel turns out to be unexpectedly close to Spinoza, deeply opposed to Cartesian and other antinaturalist voluntarisms, while favoring social emancipation.
