About the Author
Michael E. Hyland is Professor of Health Psychology at the University of Plymouth. For the first 15 years of his career he worked as a theoretical psychologist and helped set up the International Society for Theoretical Psychology. He went on to develop an interest in health psychology, specialising in respiratory disease. He is the author of several quality of life questionnaires and has published over 100 articles in psychology and medical journals.

Inaccurate

The author has unfortunately uncritically repeated many falsehoods about ME ("CFS") found in the literature by a small group of charlatans who seek to cast ME as a psychogenic disorder.
I refer the authors to the 2011 ME International Consensus Criteria for accurate information on ME
I apologize to anyone who feels this review and negative-rating is overly focused on one disease. Giving it one-star could be misleading to people who don't have time to read this review, who assume that I think the whole book is terrible. This is a definite negative to my giving it one-star. However, all of the inaccurate info on ME causes a huge amount of iatrogenic morbidity and even some mortality. It is so important that this be addressed that I believe this benefit outweighs the detriment I mentioned. I understand if you feel differently.
I would love to give the book a five-star rating and will very gladly do so if an accurate entry on ME is substituted. I do think it is otherwise a very good work. Pls take info from the ME ICC, supra, and/or contact me for more info and free help. Thank you.
There are some accurate statements in the piece on ME, but many harmful inaccuracies taken from studies or articles by proven frauds such as Simon Wessely and which use the Reeves and Sharpe definitions of "CFS" which are both patently invalid on their face.
Here are a sample of the egregious inaccuracies in this article:
"Like CFS and IBS, patients with medically unexplained symptoms have no specific pathophysiology associated with their symptoms." p.15
"The muscles of the CFS patient are not actually weak, they just appear to the patient to be weak." p.174
"No biochemical has been found to help or treat CFS" p.174
