About the Author
Gordon Taylor is Honorary Research Associate at Monash University, Victoria: before his retirement he was Associate Professor and Director of the Language and Learning Unit in the Faculty of Arts. He was a pioneer in the development of content and discipline specific writing programmes for students in higher education. His many publications include The Student's Writing Guide for the Arts and Social Sciences (1989).

More useful to teachers than to students

I teach research writing skills to students, and prescribed this book one year because I liked the book. It had very useful ideas about reading and analysing articles, making summaries, expanding one's arguments and writing conclusions. But I quickly realised that I made a mistake. With my many years of writing experience I could appreciate the author's many insights, but my students (as novice writers) found it too difficult.
So, I rate it three stars because the title (in my opinion) is misleading. It will help writing teachers gain new insights into writing, but inexperienced writers (average students) might find it to be too advanced. So, if you teach writing, there is much to learn from it, but if you are a student - there are books that make writing much easier to understand.
