About the Author
A. R. Disney was educated at the University of Oxford and Harvard University and has taught history at Melbourne and La Trobe Universities. His publications include Twilight of the Pepper Empire (1978) and numerous articles, papers, and essays, published variously in the Economic History Review, Studia, Indica, Mare Liberum, Anais de Historia de Alem-mar, and other journals and proceedings.

Portugal's people and history

This history of Portugal was very easy to read and follow. Very informative of the era that was discussed. This is Vol. No. 2 only. If you were looking for the beginnings of the Portuguese you will be disappointed. It is not discussed in this vol.

The Portuguese in North Africa, the Atlantic islands, Brazil, Goa and other places. Perhaps the best overall account.

This may be the best overall history of the Portuguese empire (this volume covers it to 1800). The book is well-written and thoroughly researched. It is somewhere between a political survey and social history. Some readers may find considerable portions a bit dry, because administering an empire is less exciting that battling to establish it.
The book is not chronological, exactly, but more by particular regions of empire over time, although the interrelationships are discussed. Such areas as North Africa, the Atlantic Islands and the rest are discussed--Disney covers parts that don't get discussed so often, including the Cape Verdes and Principe. For me, the most interesting portions were those on Goa, the Atlantic islands and early Brazil, along with the accounts of Portuguese adventurers in Southeast Asia. Maps are reasonably good, but no illustrations in the copy I read.
