Fascinating book, falling away at the end

A very enjoyable and thought-provoking history of theories of memory, from ancient times to recent. The book is organized only semi-chronologically, with chapters covering broad themes and a chronological organization within the chapters. I would have preferred a simpler chronological organization, but this is a minor complaint. The last quarter or so of the book is not as strong ask the first three quarters, and in some ways the book does not manage to develop a really big idea that is introduced and made central at the beginning. This is the idea that the psychology of memory itself has changed over historical time, as a consequence of changes in the uses to which memory is put, the technologies that accompany it, and other aspects of the context in which memory operates. This is a very interesting idea that never really got the development that was promised and that it deserved. It would be pretty hard to do it justice, of course. In any case, I do recommend the book.
