Review
"Li Feng has delivered a highly competent and accessible account of the social, political, and institutional history of early China. The text incorporates the most current state of scholarship in a rapidly developing field and deserves particular praise for its expert inclusion of archaeological evidence. The book will be welcomed by non-specialists and specialists alike."
Roel Sterckx, University of Cambridge
"As Professor Li acknowledges, it is daring for a single scholar to attempt a coherent account of the history of early China over the truly longue durée. The task demands a staggering command of the textual sources and archaeology of two millennia, before one even contemplates the writing of a synthetic account of a vast sweep of social and cultural history. The simple fact is that there is no historian writing in English who can match Professor Li's magisterial command and historical insight, and this account is sorely needed. Early China is a great achievement!"
David Pankenier, Lehigh University
"An extremely useful overview. It provides undergraduates in particular with a comprehensive, competently written and digestible one-volume introduction to the study of early China, while also offering scholars in the field a sense of where early China studies as a whole are heading at the present moment."
Oliver Weingarten, Bulletin of the School of Oriental and African Studies

very good introduction to Ancient China
By kkbs
If anybody is looking for an abbreviated, updated and more readable version of the standard "Cambridge History of Ancient China" plus its volume on the Qin and Han dynasties, this book is it. On approximately 300 pages Li Feng gives an overview of early Chinese history from the first complex societies, through Erlitou and Erlingang, Shang Anyang and Western an Eastern Zhou dynasty, including spring and autumn as well as the Warring States periods to the Qin unification and finally the consolidation under the Han dynasty. While of course lacking the detail of the above mentioned standard, this book even gives some new insights and perspective resulting from archaeological findings in recent years. Since it was written by one author "Early China" is however, easier to read as a single book. It contains numerous b/w pictures of archaeological findings (in particular bronze vessels) and many maps on individual aspects.
The book certainly is strongest in its chapters on Shang and Zhou , but worthwhile to read also on the other periods handled herein. For me this is a highly recommendable introduction on the early periods of Chinese history.

A Book Written by an Expert to Inspire Non-Experts
By Mary Wilbur
This is an excellent general introduction to the period of Chinese history known as "Early China," which begins about 5000 BCE during the Neolithic age and ends with the fall of the Han dynasty in 221 CE. It is very well written and assumes no expertise on the part of the reader. I originally read it back in January, then lent to my ex-husband. He must have thought it was a gift because he never gave it back; so I'm buying it again.
If you are interested in ancient civilizations, archeology, or Chinese history, this book will not disappoint you.

Excellent and thorough coverage of the origins and development of Chinese civilization. Highly recommended.
By Fredrick Klarer
Excellent narrative of the development of Chinese civilization from early pre-history through the end of the Han dynasty. If you want to know how the basic elements of Chinese culture developed you could not do better than this book. Well written and accessible. Includes thorough discussion of the archaeological finds of the past forty years and how those finds have changed or confirmed earlier conclusions about the earliest periods of Chinese culture.
