About the Author
Rik Van Nieuwenhove is Lecturer in Theology in Limerick, Ireland. He is the author of Jan van Ruusbroec, Mystical Theologian of the Trinity (2003) and co-author (with Declan Marmion) of An Introduction to the Trinity (Cambridge, 2011). He is co-editor (with Joseph Wawrykow) of The Theology of Thomas Aquinas (2005) and is the principal editor (with collaboration from Rob Faesen and Helen Rolfson) of Late-Medieval Mysticism of the Low Countries (2008).

Comprehensive and Sophisticated

In his Introduction to Medieval Theology Rk Van Nieuwenhove has managed to offer an accessible introduction to Medieval Theology while never dodging the more intricate issues from the time. As such the reader is guaranteed to develop a broad knowledge while also engaging the sophisticated depths.
Van Nieuwenhove is able to achieve this by harnessing vast amounts of recent scholarship into the chapters. Outdated narratives about Trinitarian dichotomies between East and West or about Aquinas' lack of dependence on scripture and revelation are nowhere to be found. Coupled with this first class up to the minute scholarship, we see Van Nieuwenhove's real gift for teaching on every page. Metaphors unpacking very difficult theological concepts are offered, perhaps fashioned in classroom situations, that can make complex ideas coherent for students. An example is on page 66 where Van Nieuwenhove looks at Eriugena's idea (shared with Gregory of Nyssa) that creation allows for divine self comprehension. He compares it to how an undefinable mood can be expressed and then witnessed when we, for example, play the piano giving sound to that which was partially obscured, even to ourselves. With such images (and their are countless examples) Van Nieuwenhove shows a capacity to illustrate the relationship between God and the world manifesting the technical finesse and care that the medieval theologians do but through helpful and relatable images rather than dense and technical language.
Through great scholarship and brilliant pedagogical gifts Van Nieuwenhove is able to broadly introduce Medieval theology while also giving life to the subtle nuances therein that make it delightful and relevant.
As such every teacher would benefit tremendously form this book. It is comprehensive, nuanced and accessible.
Finally the book is offered in such a way as to present the significance of the ideas explored. Van Nieuwenhove offers them not by virtue of their similarity to our thinking today but in that PRECISELY because of their difference they can challenge our worldview and shake us from the safe stagnation of modern assumptions. As such, students, teachers and those interested in theology owe Rik Van Nieuwenhove significant gratitude for this brilliant book.
