About the Author
Dr Tine (Martina) De Moor has studied history and environmental sciences at the universities of Ghent, Antwerp and London. In the past, she has published on the evolution of several types of institutions for collective action, and in particular on the functioning of common land in Western Europe. She is currently an Assistant Professor at the University of Utrecht, The Netherlands.
Jan Luiten van Zanden is Professor of Economic History at Utrecht University and Senior Research Fellow at the IISG.
Jan Lucassen is a Senior Research Fellow at the IISG and Professor of International and Comparative Social History at the Free University in Amsterdam. He has published widely on comparative global labour history, including labour migrations, craftsmen's and journeymen's guilds, labour relations (in particular in the brick industry) and the monetization of remunerations.

A fascinating insight into the guilds you thought you knew,

This wide-reaching study which derives largely from the work of the recently deceased S.R. "Larry" Epstein of the London School of Economics, explores the reality of the craft guilds of Medieval and Early-Modern Europe, and far beyond. Essays on Holland and Flanders, France, Italy, and Central Europe anchor the book in a solid deeply researched analysis based on systematic review of thousands of records. The Italians even made a database of all the guilds in each town in Italy, with which to analyze the phenomenon. The result is a far more nuanced view than the traditional disparaging cliche of guilds as impediments to progress. To the contrary, in many cases guilds seem to have been the engine of technological development and economic vitality. Other essays go on to review the development of guilds in Ottoman Turkey, Japan, China, India, and even in Sub-Saharan Africa.
If you really want to get a grip on the reality of what a guild was, and what it's actual relevance is to modern society, you could do worse than to start here.
My only gripe about this book is the binding, which is flimsy, the cover is paper and was curling up at the edges by the time I'd finished reading it. For such an expensive book it deserves a nicer binding.
