About the Author
Peter Van den Bossche is Professor of International Economic Law, Head of the Department of International and European Law and Academic Director of the Institute for Globalisation and International Regulation at Maastricht University, The Netherlands. He studied law at the University of Antwerp (Lic. jur.), the University of Michigan (LL.M.) and the European University Institute, Florence (Dr. jur.). From 1997 to 2001, Peter Van den Bossche was Counsellor to the Appellate Body of the WTO, Geneva. In 2001 he served as Acting Director of the Appellate Body Secretariat.

Great guide for students of WTO Law.

Van den Bosschle's textbook "Law and Policty of the WTO" is a wonderful textbook on WTO Law and Policy. He writes on all aspects of WTO Law and Practice. As a textbook, it is obviously basic and assumes a relatively elementary level of prior knowledge. The book is already quite large, but at times I have felt like it's coverage lacks certain information that I think that students could use. For example, I was unable to find any defintion or comment on the meaning of the term "general infrastructure" as used in the SCM agreement. But of course, this is relatively trivial. As as a book published in 2008, it is relatively up to date. Even if you are taking a course on International Trade that uses another textbook, I highly recommend that you purchase or use this book as a supplement. In my view, it's the best out there.

Excellent text for both students and practitioners

I teach International Trade Law at the undergraduate level and I have found this to be the most accessible yet comprehensive and analytical WTO text to date. The text is well-written and structured, making the information quite accessible for students being exposed to International Trade for the first time. This notwithstanding, there is a high degree of analysis and commentary for those more versed in the field. I have found particularly useful van den Bossche's balanced treatment of the various negotiating issues and systemic challenges facing the WTO, reflecting not simply the views of developed countries but also of developing countries. There are also useful exercises throughout the chapters as well as a quick reference summary at the end of each chapter. All in all, this is a wonderful text which i highly recommend and eagerly await a new edition.

Hard to find text for LAW460 International Trade & Finance

Hard to get text for LAW460 Trade & Finance. Could not find it locally, but Amazon always comes through.
I believe there may be a new edition available late 2013, which would be useful as WTO case law has moved on in the last couple of years. Does not cover Bilateral Investment Treaties (BITs) nor much on FTA's or PTAs ... which is a shame, as this seems to be the way the world is headed.
